Responsible for the management, direction and coordination of daily operation of the union-based production facility and specific departments which support the manufacturing by performing the listed duties personally or through subordinate managers and coworkers.  Overall responsibility for safety, quality, delivery, and cost.  Other duties may be assigned.

 
 

Sets manufacturing objectives and develops action plans for achieving production targets of various product lines within the plant with emphasis on continual improvement efforts. Maintains an ongoing review of revenues, costs, productivity, and other key business metrics to maximize financial and operational results.

Implements improvements in operating procedures and production processes to: (a) improve product quality, (b) reduce direct labor content, (c) improve product flow, and (d) eliminate non-value-added time. Implements changes in working conditions and use of equipment to increase efficiency of department(s).

Reviews, evaluates, and recommends manpower levels consistent with sales and production requirements.

Develops measurements for analyzing, appraising, and interpreting the performance of the departments and responds with corrective actions as required. Analyzes and resolves work problems and assists coworkers in solving work problems.

Reviews production and operating reports and resolves operational, manufacturing, and maintenance problems to ensure minimum cost impacts and operational delays.

Interviews, hires, and trains coworkers to achieve revenue and income targets. Appraises and reviews coworker performance, with reward and disciplinary actions taken as required.

Provides direction to implement the latest manufacturing, manpower, and business system processes.

Reviews and evaluates plant equipment and makes recommendations for upgrades and capital additions.

Holds continuous improvement meetings with coworkers and documents continuous improvement activities.

Interfaces with Sales, Customer Service, and customers to provide support and assistance in resolving lead-time, delivery, and product issues.

Ensures company-directed, national, and local EHS guidelines and regulations are implemented, documented and maintained. Creates an awareness of safety objectives and requirements within the plant. Implements corrective actions of identified safety issues.

Assures incoming components and manufactured products follow engineering and manufacturing specifications. Oversees root cause analysis and corrective action plans for internal resolution or with suppliers.

Reviews production schedules and makes work assignments (including overtime) or adjusts work procedures as required to meet those schedules. Reviews capacity and resource levels against current and future customer requirements with planning staff to assure best lead-time and on-time performance.

Maintains accountability for raw materials in process and finished goods inventories consistent with budgets and initiatives. Ensures inventory counts are performed to schedule to maintain accuracy. Assists in root cause analysis and corrective actions of any inventory inaccuracies

Interprets and communicates company policies to workers and ensures employees comply with standard operational and working practices. Confers with other managers or supervisors to coordinate activities of individual departments. Provides a harassment-free work environment.

Works to resolve coworker grievances informally or by providing response to any written grievances. Works with Human Resources to provide optimum hourly / salaried coworker relations.

Initiates and executes plans to motivate workers to achieve work goals.

Develops operational plans and shipment forecasts on monthly, quarterly, and annual basis.

Develops and administers departmental budgets for labor and operating supplies. Monitors performance and variance to budget and acts as appropriate to achieve the plan.

Supports company annual strategic planning process as needed on operations objectives.

Interfaces with management staff and different levels of management outside the division as required.

 
 

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
Direct reports include Production Manager, Materials Manager, Facilities/Manufacturing Engineering Manager, Product Design Engineering Manager, Nuclear Quality Manager, and QA Manager. Is responsible for the overall direction, coordination, and evaluation of the departments. Carries out management and supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, training employees planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining coworkers; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

QUALIFICATIONS
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. A thorough understanding of manufacturing methods is required, and experience in a union production environment is preferred. Must also have demonstrated ability to supervise people in various disciplines. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
Bachelor's degree (B.A./B.S.) with an engineering or business major from a four-year college or university; seven to ten years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

LANGUAGE SKILLS
Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS
Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference and fundamentals of trigonometry. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios and proportions to practical situations.

REASONING ABILITY
Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables. Demonstrated analytical and synthesizing abilities.

COMPUTING SKILLS
Ability to effectively utilize word processing software and spreadsheets and to navigate and use and other custom applications software in a MS Windows environment.
