Position Overview

The Smalley Foundation seeks an organized and motivated Nonprofit Operations Intern. This position provides hands-on experience in the day-to-day nonprofit operations and exposure to program management, communications, outreach, and executive administration. The intern works closely with the Foundation's directors and coordinators to support a range of operational priorities. This is an excellent opportunity for anyone interested in nonprofit management, communications, or public affairs.


Responsibilities

  • Support directors and coordinators with day-to-day organizational and program operations
  • Assist with program outreach and follow-up communications with external stakeholders
  • Maintain and update organizational records, databases, contact lists, and other program information
  • Assist with calendar management, meeting coordination, travel itineraries, and scheduling
  • Coordinate with third-party vendors and external partners
  • Attend internal and external meetings and prepare clear meeting notes and action items
  • Draft and schedule social media content and assist with other communications projects
  • Conduct research and compile information to support programs and organizational initiatives
  • Assist with document preparation, organization, and general administrative projects
  • Track deadlines, outstanding items, and project follow-ups
  • Provide additional operational and project support as organizational needs arise

 

Qualifications

  • Currently enrolled in an accredited college or university
  • Strong organizational skills and exceptional attention to detail
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Professional judgment and the ability to handle information with appropriate discretion
  • Ability to manage multiple assignments, deadlines, and priorities
  • Strong follow-through and a demonstrated sense of personal responsibility
  • Comfortable communicating professionally with colleagues, vendors, and external stakeholders
  • Proficiency with standard workplace technology, including Microsoft Office
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively as part of a small team
  • Interest in nonprofit management, communications, public affairs, program administration, or a related field
  • Familiarity with AP Style
  • Previous internship, administrative, communications, nonprofit, or campus leadership experience is preferred but not required.

 

Schedule & Compensation

This is a part-time, semester-based internship requiring approximately 15–20 hours per week. The position is hybrid, with most work completed at the Foundation's downtown Washington, DC office. Compensation is $18 per hour. The internship is initially offered for one academic semester, with the possibility of extension based on performance, organizational needs, and mutual interest.
