What is non clinical nursing?

Non clinical nursing jobs are roles for nurses that do not involve direct patient care. Instead, these positions focus on areas such as administration, education, case management, informatics, consulting, or research. Non clinical nurses use their medical knowledge and experience to support healthcare systems, improve patient outcomes indirectly, and help with organizational operations. These jobs can offer a different work environment, often with regular hours and less physical demand compared to bedside nursing.

What are the daily responsibilities of a nurse in a non clinical role?

Nurses in non-clinical positions often focus on tasks such as patient education, case management, quality improvement, policy development, or healthcare administration. Their days may involve reviewing patient records, coordinating with healthcare teams, developing training materials, or analyzing data to improve patient outcomes. While they may not provide direct bedside care, their work is crucial for supporting clinical staff and enhancing the overall healthcare system. Collaboration with interdisciplinary teams and effective communication are key parts of the job.

What skills and qualifications are needed for a non clinical nursing role?

To thrive in a non-clinical nursing role, you need a nursing background (such as an RN or BSN), strong organizational skills, and experience in healthcare administration or education. Familiarity with healthcare management software, electronic health records (EHRs), and sometimes certifications like Certified Case Manager (CCM) are often required. Outstanding communication, problem-solving, and leadership skills help you excel when coordinating care, training staff, or managing healthcare programs. These skills ensure smooth operations, compliance, and effective patient support outside direct patient care.

This position supports a collaborative pediatric hearing-loss initiative involving the University of New Mexico, Presbyterian Ear Institute, and the New Mexico Department of Health EHDI program by helping families understand next steps, access diagnostic and follow-up services, overcome barriers to care, and connect with community and early intervention resources. • Works with the UNM and PEI team, the NMDOH EHDI program, birthing facilities, community providers, and other partners to help coordinate follow-up for infants who refer on newborn hearing screening and children with a new diagnosis of hearing loss.
  • Helps families identify and address barriers to care, including transportation, lodging, scheduling, insurance/funding issues, communication challenges, and other social determinants of health and acts as an advocate for patients and families.
  • Provides families with credible, evidence-based educational resources related to pediatric hearing loss, newborn hearing screening follow-up, EHDI timelines, and available local/state resources, as directed by the clinical and research team.
  • Participates in education and outreach activities with community partners, healthcare providers, and parents to increase awareness of the project, available resources, and EHDI best practices.
  • Develops and maintains collaborative relationships with community agencies, tribal/Native American-serving organizations, Indian Health Service partners, early intervention providers, and other referral sources, as assigned.
  • Documents navigation activities and maintains accurate files, databases, records, reports, and other project-related documentation in accordance with project protocols and institutional requirements.
  • Assists the research/nurse coordinator and project team with tracking infants and families through the care pathway and supports data collection processes as appropriate for a non-clinical navigator role through the three-year grant project.
