We're now entering the next frontier: GenAI-powered legal systems and agentic workflows.
About the Role
We're looking for a Staff Software Engineer with deep GenAI curiosity and systems-thinking expertise to help architect and deliver Visa's next-generation Legal AI platform.
You will play a central role in building our Model Control Plane (MCP) - a productized internal platform that orchestrates, governs, and scales all Legal GenAI and agent-driven workflows. This is not just app development - this is platform engineering for AI-native enterprise systems.
From enabling secure AI access to legal systems of record, to designing governed interfaces for intelligent agents, your work will directly impact how legal work gets done at Visa.
What You'll Build:
GenAI Platform & Agentic Workflows
  • Architect and evolve the MCP Control Plane - the central layer governing all Legal GenAI interactions
  • Enable AI systems (e.g., Harvey AI and future agents) to securely interact with enterprise legal data and tools
  • Design agent-ready APIs, SDKs, and contracts that make GenAI capabilities reusable and scalable
  • Power end-to-end agentic legal workflows, such as:
    • Matter intake automation
    • Legal invoice review
    • IP portfolio analysis
    • Regulatory reporting
    • Legal research and policy Q&A

Governance, Security & Scale
  • Build robust capabilities for:
    • Policy enforcement
    • AuthN/AuthZ and secure access control
    • Audit logging and traceability
    • Rate limiting and workload isolation
    • Multi-environment deployment (dev/test/prod)
  • Ensure all GenAI interactions meet Visa's high bar for trust, compliance, and governance

Platform Engineering Excellence
  • Establish MCP as a true internal product, with strong versioning, backward compatibility, and developer experience
  • Design and implement connectors/adapters for legal systems of record
  • Drive architecture for high scalability, resiliency, and observability

What You'll Do
  • Design, build, and scale mission-critical applications supporting Corporate Legal and Non-AML Compliance
  • Lead end-to-end engineering, from system design and coding to test automation and production support
  • Collaborate closely with Product, TPMs, and business partners to shape AI-driven solutions
  • Mentor engineers and elevate engineering practices across the team
  • Run POCs to explore emerging GenAI technologies and rapidly validate new approaches
  • Influence architecture decisions and help define the future of AI-enabled legal platforms at Visa

This is a hybrid position. Expectation of days in the office will be confirmed by your Hiring Manager.

Qualifications
Basic Qualifications:
5+ years of relevant work experience with a Bachelor's Degree or at least 2 years of work experience with an Advanced degree (e.g. Masters, MBA, JD, MD) or 0 years of work experience with a PhD, OR 8+ years of relevant work experience.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • 6 or more years of work experience with a Bachelors Degree or 4 or more years of relevant experience with an Advanced Degree (e.g. Masters, MBA, JD, MD) or up to 3 years of relevant experience with a PhD
  • Expertise in Python, JavaScript, NoSQL
  • At least 3 years of experience building applications on one of the modern JavaScript frameworks such as Angular, Node JS or React
  • Experience in developing and architecting large-scale, production-grade applications
  • Experience in developing and implementing AI systems and algorithms is a plus
  • Experience with agile development incorporating Continuous Integration and Continuous Delivery, utilizing technologies such as GIT, Maven, and Jenkins
  • Ability to create wireframes and responsive designs that result in a great user experience
  • Experience in NoSQL such as MongoDB and Cassandra or in PostgreSQL.
  • Enjoy working fast and smart, and able to grasp complex concepts to design and build algorithms from scratch
  • Strong interpersonal, facilitation, and leadership skills along with effective communication (both written and verbal) skills and the ability to present complex ideas in a clear, concise way
  • Ability to work in a complex organization to determine business and customer needs, providing the best solution to meet those needs
  • Strong teamwork focus and the ability to foster collaboration within and across teams
  • Passionate about learning and applying new technologies and takes pride in delivering working software

U.S. Applicants Only
The estimated salary range for this position is $131,600.00 to $ 210,300.00 USD per year, which may include potential sales incentive payments (if applicable). Salary may vary depending on job-related factors which may include knowledge, skills, experience, and location. In addition, this position may be eligible for bonus and equity.Visa has a comprehensive benefits package for which this position may be eligible that includes Medical, Dental, Vision, 401(k), FSA/HSA, Life Insurance, Paid Time Off, and Wellness Program.

This position requires travel 5-10% of the time.
