What is a NOAA GIS?

A NOAA GIS (Geographic Information Systems) job involves using mapping and spatial analysis tools to support NOAA’s mission of understanding and managing oceanic, atmospheric, and coastal resources. Professionals in these roles work with geospatial data to create maps, analyze environmental changes, and assist in decision-making processes related to weather forecasting, climate studies, and marine conservation. They may work with GIS software, satellite imagery, and data visualization tools to help NOAA scientists and policymakers interpret spatial information.

What are typical daily responsibilities for a NOAA GIS specialist?

As a NOAA GIS specialist, your daily tasks often include gathering and processing environmental data, creating and maintaining detailed maps, and conducting spatial analyses to support research and program goals. You'll collaborate with scientists, engineers, and policy experts to visualize complex geographic information and may also assist with the dissemination of data to the public or stakeholders. Project work can vary, including tasks like updating coastal mapping, analyzing climate trends, or monitoring marine resources. Teamwork and adaptability are important, as priorities can shift based on new data or urgent environmental concerns.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the NOAA GIS position, and why are they important?
