What does a NOAA Data Scientist do?

A NOAA Data Scientist analyzes and interprets large datasets related to weather, climate, oceans, and the atmosphere to support the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's research and operational missions. They use statistical methods, machine learning, and data visualization tools to uncover patterns and trends that inform forecasting, environmental monitoring, and policy decisions. Their work often involves collaborating with scientists, engineers, and policy makers to improve data-driven insights and solutions for environmental challenges.

What are some common challenges faced by NOAA Data Scientists when working with large and diverse environmental datasets?

NOAA Data Scientists often work with massive and complex datasets collected from various sources such as satellites, ocean buoys, and weather stations. One of the main challenges is ensuring data quality and consistency, as datasets may have missing values, inconsistent formats, or biases due to different collection methods. Additionally, integrating and analyzing multi-source data to extract actionable insights can be technically demanding and may require advanced knowledge of data processing tools and statistical methods. Collaboration with domain experts and other scientists is essential to accurately interpret the data and validate findings before they inform NOAA's research or policy recommendations.

What is the difference between Noaa Data Scientist vs Meteorologist?

AspectNoaa Data ScientistMeteorologist
Required CredentialsDegree in Data Science, Statistics, or related field; knowledge of programming languages like Python or RDegree in Meteorology, Atmospheric Science, or related field; meteorological certifications often preferred
Work EnvironmentResearch labs, data analysis centers, government agenciesWeather stations, forecasting centers, media outlets
Employer & Industry UsageNOAA, research institutions, environmental agenciesNOAA, weather services, media, aviation, agriculture

While both roles work within NOAA and related industries, Noaa Data Scientists focus on analyzing large datasets to inform environmental decisions, whereas Meteorologists primarily forecast weather and interpret atmospheric conditions. The roles often overlap in data analysis skills, but their core responsibilities differ significantly.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a NOAA Data Scientist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a NOAA Data Scientist, you need a strong background in statistics, data analysis, and environmental sciences, typically supported by a degree in a relevant field such as computer science, mathematics, or atmospheric science. Proficiency with programming languages (such as Python or R), GIS software, and data visualization tools, as well as familiarity with large datasets and NOAA-specific systems, is essential. Strong problem-solving skills, collaboration, and effective communication set outstanding candidates apart in this role. These skills are crucial for interpreting complex environmental data and translating findings into actionable insights for policy and research.

The division's work includes field-based research from research vessels, small boats, planes, and advanced unmanned technologies, as well as laboratory-based research in areas such as molecular genetics, photogrammetry, stable isotopes, hormone assays, passive acoustics, and necropsies. Additional support may include end-to-end data management services from data collection through quality control, processing, analysis, dissemination, and archival in cloud-based repositories following FAIR data use principles and NOAA data governance policy.

ResponsibilitiesDuties of the Scientific Data Manager will include the following:
  • Support data collection and management and survey coordination within SEFSC MMTD.
  • Conduct, support, and/or oversee aspects of field research activities conducted by the Division and partners, from project design to data collection, management, sharing, and dissemination of scientific information.
  • Coordinate and communicate with Principal Investigators, Program Leads, and MMTD leadership.
  • Develop and update standard research protocols and comply with scientific research permit requirements, including the Marine Mammal Protection Act, Endangered Species Act, Animal Welfare Act, and NMFS Animal Care and Use Policy.
  • Manage and curate data for accuracy and quality.
  • Ensure metadata is provided and data is properly stored, archived, and accessible in established cloud repositories and in accordance with NOAA's Data Governance Strategy and other established NOAA data policies.
  • Use current techniques and software for managing large and complex datasets, including acoustics, photo-ID, omics, and survey data.
  • Work with other MMTD team members to formulate analytical solutions to marine mammal management questions that integrate existing data streams within NOAA.
  • Run editing and validation procedures to ensure high-quality data is maintained and provided for advanced analysis or varied data users.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for Chief Scientist(s) to provide project planning, budget, and logistical support for ship and/or field surveys.
  • Assist Project Investigators, MMTD, and the Center Director in preparing ship time requests, justifications, and evaluations of potential funding and time allocation scenarios.
  • Oversee field survey equipment inventory, repair, maintenance, and storage, including operating the forklift and crane as needed to prepare and load/unload equipment.

  • Maintain and update websites, including posting newsworthy stories and field survey blogs and sharing briefings and reports internally and externally.
  • Develop written technical reports and peer-reviewed publications documenting project findings.
  • Disseminate scientific results through presentations to diverse stakeholder groups.
  • Attend planning and coordination meetings with MMTD researchers, either virtually or in person.
QualificationsThe Scientific Data Manager should have the following:
  • Master's degree in marine ecology, environmental science, oceanography, or related field; or an undergraduate degree with 1 year of relevant research experience.
  • Working knowledge of marine mammal or marine species data collection and processing.
  • Experience managing complex datasets collected from varied surveys and observation platforms.
  • Ability to work with other data managers to coordinate data processing efforts.
  • Proficient technical writing skills to maintain adequate documentation of data processing protocols.
  • Experience writing and editing technical reports describing data summaries and trends in miscellaneous scientific publications.
