SUBSTITUTE Teacher or Aides for Early Childhood: Spanish, Chinese, and or Japanese- Immersion Language

Department: Faculty
Reports to: Head of Early Childhood

(Grades Pre-k Low-K, K & Aides)

Duration: On-Call (M-F) throughout the school term

Compensation:

  • Sub Early Childhood Teacher Aides: $24.00/hour and/or
  • Sub Early Childhood Teachers: $26.00/hour

The International School of Portland is in search of dynamic Substitute Language Immersion educators for our Early Childhood program.

The International School of Portland provides a warm multicultural environment where our students are fully immersed in Spanish, Japanese or Chinese language and culture. Our Language Immersion Substitute teacher or Aide will use the target language (Spanish, Chinese or Japanese) throughout the day while engaged with students.

We are seeking those who will be committed to the mission and vision of the International School of Portland, and able to demonstrate the values and traits of the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Program and Learner Profile while guest teaching and working.

The ideal candidate will be dedicated to meeting the needs of diverse student learners, as well as, committed to being a collaborative team player.

The International School of Portland is committed to small class sizes and our average class size is 14 students. We offer an engaged school community with supportive and interactive parents, where our multicultural environment is appreciated and celebrated.

Working Conditions/Physical Requirements

  • Capable of quickly traveling to multiple locations on school campus including up and down hills, lifting or otherwise carrying 40 pounds, traveling up/down flights of stairs, standing and sitting for long durations, typing for continuous hours on a computer keyboard, and reading information on a computer screen.

  • There may be flexibility for an EC substitute to cover elementary grade levels, specifically from First through Fifth grade

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Native level fluency in one of the three languages (Spanish, or Chinese, or Japanese)
  • At least 1 year experience working with preschool aged children
  • A Bachelor's degree in Education or Early Childhood/Elementary Education is preferred
  • Knowledge and understanding of Inquiry Based-Primary Years Program pedagogy is a plus but not necessary
  • Experience teaching or working in an immersion program
  • Experience working in a multi-cultural environment
  • Experience using technology in the classroom
  • Candidates offered a position must be able to pass a background check
  • Candidates offered a position must provide proof of eligibility to work in the U.S.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Elementary Teaching/Education or equivalent experience

  • Basic understanding of spoken and written English

  • Demonstrated proficiency in the target language along with demonstrated ability to teach the target language

  • At least 6 months -1 year of professional teaching experience in a language immersion classroom or something similar

  • Already have or be able to obtain specific certifications and trainings
