Job description

Nature of Work Under limited supervision, leads a variety of youth recreation programs and activities; uses lesson plans to direct educational/instructional programs; supervises and mentors children, administers first aid when needed; completes incident/accident reports in a timely fashion when needed; safely drives vans/passenger cars to transport children to and from fieldtrips; answers parent/guardian questions; provides customer service; enforces department and camp rules; monitors condition of equipment and facilities; appropriately represents the county, department, and the camp to the general public, and other duties as assigned. This position may also assist in developing the camp schedule and lesson plans. Fun at the Fort Summer Camp Background: Coconino County Parks and Recreation is committed to providing excellent and affordable recreational programs to all individuals.

Programming often focuses on beginners/novices to provide an accessible and inclusive setting for participation, exploration, and discovery. The Fun at the Fort Summer Camp is a co-ed day camp for youth 8 to 15 years of age. The camp operates in weekly sessions (Monday-Friday) with varying weekly themes.

Themes may include topics such as outdoor recreation, scientific exploration, environmental / nature education, and sports/athletics. Rec on Wheels Background: Rec on Wheels is a mobile recreation program launched in 2023 by Coconino County Parks & Recreation and Health and Human Services, designed to bring fun, engaging activities to rural and outlying communities across the County. Rec on Wheels offers free, drop-in programming for all ages, with the goal of increasing access to recreation and promoting health and wellness through physical activity.

From casual games to movie nights, every event is designed to be safe, inclusive, and fun. Working with the Recreation Program Coordinator, will facilitate community events / tabling opportunities with the Rec on Wheels program. Will travel to and from destinations utilizing County vehicles towing the Rec on Wheels trailer, setting up mobile recreational equipment and promotional materials, engaging with participants of all ages in free form activity play.

Activities that may be set up include Sporting goods, Yard games, Board games, Portable mini golf, Disc Golf, etc. Please note: This is a temporary, part-time position with hours up to 30 hours per week. This position does not include benefits.

Typical Duties (Illustrative Only) Instruct/facilitate recreation programs and lessons which may include, but are not limited to outdoor recreation, team sports, games, arts and crafts, and icebreakers/initiatives. Follows and adapts lesson plans to meet predetermined goals and objectives. Communicate with internal and external customers including youth and parents/guardians.

Manages risk by adhering to policies and procedures, supervising participants, administering first aid, and documenting accidents/incidents. Safely drives passenger vehicles, potentially including a 12-passenger van, to transport participants and equipment to and from off-site field trips. Supports the facilitation of programs/activities by outside organizations.

Appropriately handles interpersonal conflicts and disciplines children if needed. Cleans and maintains County programming areas and equipment. Essential functions include but are not limited to; driving standing, walking and bending; twisting, lifting, carrying; working with and around other staff and the public; hearing and speech for ordinary conversation.

Environmental factors include but not limited to; majority of work is outside; exposure to dust and hay. Minimum Qualifications Any combination of education, training and experience which demonstrates the ability to perform the duties of the position. Additional Requirements: Must obtain an Arizona driver's license by date of hire and maintain it throughout employment.

The final job offer will be contingent upon a satisfactory 5-year Arizona Motor Vehicle Report and passing of background check. The ideal candidate is punctual, responsible, and organized; enjoys working with youth and has a background in recreation and/or education. Preferred qualifications: Preferred qualifications include previous experience in the parks and recreation or education field, experience leading a variety of programs which may include topics related to arts and crafts, outdoor recreation experiences, cooking, off-site field trips, sports activities, etc.
