Job description

Sterile Processing Technician

Location: Richmond, VA 23230
Shift: 2nd Shift
Schedule: Monday–Friday, 3:00 PM–11:30 PM
Hours: 40 hours per week, 8 hours per day

Position Overview

We are seeking an experienced Sterile Processing Technician responsible for the safe and effective decontamination, cleaning, inspection, assembly, packaging, sterilization, and distribution of surgical instruments and medical equipment.

The technician will play a critical role in maintaining patient safety, infection prevention, and quality standards by ensuring surgical instruments and equipment are properly processed and ready for use.

All duties must be performed in accordance with ANSI/AAMI standards, manufacturer Instructions for Use (IFUs), company policies, Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), and established work instructions.

Key Responsibilities
  • Decontaminate and clean used surgical instruments and equipment using appropriate PPE and infection-control procedures.
  • Disassemble, clean, inspect, and reassemble complex surgical instruments and equipment.
  • Assemble and package surgical instrument trays and sets accurately.
  • Operate washer-disinfectors, steam sterilizers/autoclaves, and other sterile processing equipment safely and effectively.
  • Inspect instruments for cleanliness, functionality, damage, and completeness before packaging and sterilization.
  • Identify and document missing, damaged, or malfunctioning instruments according to established procedures.
  • Maintain accurate records of sterilization cycles, instrument tracking, processing activities, and inventory.
  • Handle surgical instruments and customer-owned equipment carefully to prevent damage or loss.
  • Complete computer-based documentation, tracking activities, and processing paperwork accurately and on time.
  • Monitor instrument and supply inventory and communicate replenishment needs as appropriate.
  • Perform routine cleaning and basic maintenance of sterilization and processing equipment.
  • Maintain clean, organized, and safe work areas, including decontamination and assembly areas.
  • Follow infection-control, quality-assurance, safety, and regulatory requirements.
  • Communicate effectively with team members, operations personnel, and distribution staff.
  • Identify opportunities to improve workflow, efficiency, quality, and processing procedures.
  • Participate in required training and continuing education to maintain competency and certification.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Minimum 1 year of hands-on sterile processing experience.
  • Current Sterile Processing Technician certification, such as CRCST or CIS.
