What kinds of entry-level tasks can I expect to handle as a project manager with no prior experience?

The College is dedicated to the ethical and competent practice of surgery. Its achievements have significantly influenced the course of scientific surgery in America and have established it as an important advocate for all surgical patients. The College has more than 95,000 members and is the largest organization of surgeons in the world. For more information, visit www.facs.org.
Our MissionThe American College of Surgeons is dedicated to improving the care of the surgical patient and safeguarding standards of care in an optimal and ethical practice environment.
Our VisionTo create a healthcare landscape where surgeons thrive and every patient has access to and benefits from the highest standards of surgical care, driven by innovation, education, leadership, and trust.
Summary: The UX Project Manager, Education will help the Division of Education improve how surgeons, learners, members, and internal stakeholders access and engage with digital education experiences across ACS platforms. This role is responsible for bringing structure to complex and sometimes ambiguous digital experience needs. The individual will work consultatively with Division of Education teams, IT, Integrated Communications, and other stakeholders to understand user needs, map current-state experiences, define requirements, identify friction points, and guide cross-functional work from discovery through implementation.
This is not primarily a content publishing, instructional design, visual design, or platform administration role. The successful candidate will combine UX-informed thinking, project management discipline, stakeholder facilitation, and strong requirements definition to help teams create clearer, more usable, and more integrated digital experiences.
This exempt position will report to the Senior Manager, Digital Integration and Transformation in the Division of Education. It is based in the ACS Chicago office and is a hybrid role: 3 days per week in the office / 2 days per week remote
The anticipated salary range for this position is $92,000 - $110,000, commensurate with related experience.
Key Responsibilities:
Digital Experience Discovery and Strategy
  • Develop a strong understanding of Division of Education programs, audiences, digital touchpoints, business needs, and user journeys.
  • Partner with internal teams to clarify user experience issues, define desired outcomes, and identify the right path forward.
  • Conduct discovery activities such as stakeholder interviews, user research, journey mapping, workflow analysis, content/process audits, and review of available data.
  • Translate ambiguous business needs into clear problem statements, user needs, project goals, requirements, and recommended next steps.
  • Identify opportunities to improve findability, navigation, access, usability, consistency, and the overall user experience across education-related digital platforms.

Requirements Definition and Project Delivery
  • Lead the development of clear requirements, user stories, workflows, acceptance criteria, implementation plans, and decision documentation for digital experience initiatives.
  • Coordinate cross-functional work among Division of Education teams, IT, Integrated Communications, vendors, and other internal partners.
  • Manage project plans, timelines, risks, dependencies, stakeholder communications, and follow-through from discovery through launch.
  • Facilitate alignment among stakeholders with different priorities, surfacing tradeoffs and helping teams make timely decisions.
  • Ensure that final digital solutions are grounded in user needs, operational realities, and ACS organizational priorities.

Digital Platform and Experience Improvement
  • Support improvements to education-related digital experiences across ACS platforms, which may include facs.org, myACS, learning platforms, video libraries, registration or purchase pathways, member-facing tools, and related digital entry points.
  • Work with IT and other partners to address platform functionality, user flows, integrations, access issues, and related technical or operational dependencies.
  • Help teams assess whether digital experiences are organized and communicated clearly and whether users can successfully find information, understand options, access resources, and complete key tasks.
  • Support continuous improvement by gathering user feedback, reviewing performance data where available, and recommending practical enhancements.
  • Maintain awareness of digital experience standards, accessibility considerations, privacy expectations, and customer service implications.

Stakeholder Consultation and Change Management
  • Serve as a consultative partner to Division of Education teams seeking to improve digital experiences, clarify needs, or launch new user-facing initiatives.
  • Help teams move from informal requests or unclear ideas into structured plans that can be evaluated, prioritized, and implemented.
  • Build strong working relationships with internal stakeholders, including program teams, technology partners, communications teams, and operational teams.
  • Communicate complex digital concepts in clear, practical language for non-technical stakeholders.
  • Support adoption of improved processes, documentation, and governance practices for digital experience work.
  • Act as a facilitator and translator to communicate user needs to technical and non-technical internal teams.
  • Serve as internal expert for internal teams to ensure that written and other communication is written with a clear user focus.

Required Education and/or Experience:
  • Bachelor's degree in user experience, human-computer interaction, digital strategy, communications, information systems, business, project management, or a related field preferred. Equivalent professional experience may be considered in place of specific educational credentials.
  • At least 3 to 5 years of experience leading cross-functional digital initiatives and coordinating solutions from discovery through implementation.
  • Demonstrated ability to translate complex or ambiguous business and user needs into clear requirements, workflows, user stories, project plans, and implementation recommendations.
  • Experience coordinating business stakeholders, technical and communications teams, vendors, and subject matter experts to advance shared goals and deliver effective solutions.
  • Experience evaluating and improving user-facing digital experiences, such as websites, portals, learning platforms, registration processes, digital services, or ecommerce and purchase flows.
  • Familiarity with user experience research and service design methods, including stakeholder and user interviews, journey mapping, usability testing, workflow analysis, and synthesis of user feedback.
  • Experience working with enterprise platforms such as CMS, CRM, LMS, AMS, analytics, ticketing, or similar systems preferred. The ability to understand user and business needs and coordinate solutions across teams is more important than expertise in any specific platform.
  • Experience in associations, professional societies, healthcare, education, medical education, or other member-serving organizations preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Strong project management, analytical, and problem-solving skills, including the ability to manage timelines, risks, dependencies, decisions, and multiple concurrent priorities.
  • Ability to create structure and maintain progress in environments with incomplete information, unclear ownership, or competing stakeholder needs.

  • Working knowledge of user-centered design principles, including usability, accessibility, information architecture, content organization, and user experience best practices.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to prepare clear requirements, documentation, summaries, recommendations, and stakeholder communications.
