Job description

Salary Range:  $57,125 - $91,971         Salary Grade: 19     FLSA: Exempt

Purpose of Classification: 

The purpose of this classification is to provide library services involving development and maintenance of library programs, curricula, collections, advanced library services and to assist in managing branch activities. 

Essential Functions: 

The following duties are normal for this position. The omission of specific statements of the duties does not exclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification. Other duties may be required and assigned.

 Supervises, directs, and evaluates assigned staff; develops and oversees employee work schedules to ensure adequate coverage and control; compiles and reviews timesheets; approves/processes employee concerns and problems and counsels or disciplines as appropriate; assists with or completes employee performance appraisals; directs work; acts as a liaison between employees and management; and trains staff in operations, policies, and procedures. 

Organizes, prioritizes, and assigns work; prioritizes and schedules work activities in order to meet objectives; ensures that subordinates have the proper resources needed to complete the assigned work; monitors status of work in progress and inspects completed work; consults with assigned staff to assist with complex/problem situations and provide technical expertise; provides progress and activity reports to management; and assists with the revision of procedure manuals as appropriate. 

Maintains and manages the property including the equipment, building, parking lot and surrounding property; supervises interior to ensure the safety of patrons, equipment, building and property; checks branch daily for maintenance or repairs; monitors progress in completion of work; reviews meeting space applications; cleans restrooms when custodian is absent; and cleans the branch when necessary. 

Develops and maintains library programs, collections, and general operations; designs and implements programming to targeted readership; maintains records of program participation; develops goals and objectives for area of specialty; recommends, develops, and implements programs and policies to achieve established objectives; recommends allocation of financial, staffing, equipment, space, and bibliographic resources; interprets and explains goals, objectives, and policies to the public; and coordinate physical facilities in assigned area.

Provides customer service to library patrons and the public; provides assistance and information related to library programs, services, materials, facilities, equipment, fees, procedures, or other issues; responds to questions and complaints related to library operations; researches problems and initiates problem resolution; greets visitors and directs to areas of library; assists patrons with various library services; assists patrons in requesting, selecting, and locating library materials; and researches book titles, book availability, patron records, or related information. 

Provides computer and reference assistance to library patrons; assists patrons in finding required information; suggests appropriate internal and external resources; and assists in obtaining tax forms from and voter registration forms. 

Instructs patrons in use of various library systems/resources, internet, and Dewey Decimal system; instructs patrons in use of indexes and databases to locate periodical literature; instructs patrons in use of various periodical databases; instructs patrons in use of library computers, printers, software programs, network programs, and other library machinery/equipment; and conducts formal classes as appropriate. 

Monitors usage of library computers; explains/enforces library rules for use of computers/Internet; performs basic maintenance and troubleshooting of computer systems and library equipment, which may include backing up data, updating systems and software, clearing paper jams, or replacing paper, toner, or ribbons; and coordinates service/repair activities as needed. 

Processes inter-library loan requests from patrons and other libraries; verifies and identifies requested materials; receives/processes borrowing requests; receives/processes incoming material; and completes internal/external documentation. 

Selects, retains, and develops library collections; selects books for purchase; prepares order lists for purchase of library materials; and removes/weeds outdated, worn, and little-used materials from library collections as needed; and leads and trains librarians and technical services paraprofessional staff in cataloging print, audiovisual, and electronic formats. 

Provides and performs reference assistance and circulation desk duties; assists public with computer questions; uses appropriate resources to answer questions in person and by phone; locates library materials; provides information on library sources; assists patrons with operation the internet and other reference databases and educational materials; assists patrons with technical issues and concerns; and provides information service and advisory service to customers and demonstrates or assists with the catalog. 

Performs all duties of subordinate Library personnel as needed; provides circulation services to patrons including checking in/out materials and registering new patrons; repairs/mends damaged books and materials; processes new/donated materials; re-shelves and locates books and materials; restocks supplies; and performs general tasks related to operation and upkeep of the Library. 

Minimum Qualifications: 

Master's degree in Library and Information Science from an American Library Association accredited graduate school and two years of experience in professional library work required.

Specific License or Certification Required: Must possess and maintain a valid Georgia driver's license; and must possess and maintain licensure from the Georgia State Board for the Certification of Librarians within six months of employment in this classification.
