Description:

The Certified Medical Coder is responsible for coordinating, verifying and coding appropriate ICD-10, CPT, and HCPCS codes for all surgical procedures within our orthopedic practice in a timely manner.


Essential Job Responsibilities:

  • Codes surgical procedures performed and diagnosis on charge.
  • Verifies and completes charge information in database and produces billing.
  • Provides additional information and reports to physicians and staff on appropriate codes.
  • Appends modifiers when appropriate.

Performance Requirements:


Knowledge:

  • Knowledge of medical practices and surgical procedures - specifically in orthopedics
  • Knowledge of computerized billing, EMR/EPM system. Athena Healthcare experience a plus!
  • Knowledge of traditional insurance plans, HMO/PPO’s, Medicare, Medicaid, and Worker’s Comp.
  • Knowledge medical terminology and anatomy of the body.

Skills:

  • Proficient skills in computer programs including spreadsheets.
  • Skill in written and verbal communication and customer relations.

Abilities:

  • Ability to communicate effectively and clearly.
  • Ability to enter accurate data and examine documents for accuracy.
  • Ability to deal courteously with physicians, patients, and staff.
  • Ability to read and understand operative reports / chart notes.
