What is a no experience court reporter?

A no experience court reporter is someone who is new to the profession and may not have prior work experience in court reporting. These individuals are typically recent graduates of accredited court reporting programs or those transitioning from other fields. Entry-level court reporters are responsible for creating accurate, verbatim transcripts of legal proceedings, depositions, or meetings, often using specialized equipment like a stenotype machine. Many employers offer on-the-job training or mentorship for those starting out in the field. Certification requirements may vary by state, but gaining experience is essential for career advancement.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a no experience court reporter?

To thrive as a No Experience Court Reporter, you need strong English grammar, listening skills, attention to detail, and typically a high school diploma or equivalent. Familiarity with stenography machines, digital recording equipment, and transcription software is often required, and pursuing certification such as Registered Professional Reporter (RPR) can be beneficial. Excellent time management, concentration, and professionalism help you stand out in capturing accurate records and handling confidential information. These skills and qualifications are vital to ensure precise legal transcripts and support the integrity of the judicial process.

What are some common challenges faced by entry-level court reporters, and how can they overcome them?

Entry-level court reporters often find it challenging to keep up with the fast pace of legal proceedings and accurately transcribe complex terminology. To overcome these challenges, new reporters can benefit from practicing shorthand or stenography regularly, seeking mentorship from experienced colleagues, and familiarizing themselves with legal jargon. Additionally, staying organized and reviewing notes promptly after proceedings can help ensure high-quality transcripts and build confidence in the role.

Key Responsibilities

Enterprise Reporting & Investigations

  • Develop and produce enterprise-level investigative and consumer-focused stories that inform and serve the public interest.
  • Pitch, research, and execute original story ideas for WRAL Investigates and 5 On Your Side that hold individuals, companies, and government entities accountable.
  • Cultivate relationships with sources, gather and analyze data, and file public records requests to support in-depth reporting.

Shooting, Writing & Editing

  • Shoot high-quality video and edit packages independently under tight deadlines.
  • Write scripts and digital articles with clarity, accuracy, and journalistic integrity.
  • Produce content in multiple formats (TV packages, digital write-ups, video explainers, and live presentations).

On-Air Performance & Live Reporting

  • Deliver polished and authoritative on-camera presentations for both live and recorded segments.
  • Conduct insightful interviews with experts, newsmakers, and impacted community members on location and in-studio.
  • Break exclusive stories and deliver breaking news coverage across all platforms.

Graphics & Data Visualization

  • Use graphics, charts, and data-driven visuals to make complex stories digestible and transparent.
  • Incorporate visual proof of accountability (e.g., what questions were asked of officials) into storytelling.

Multiplatform Content Creation

  • Post engaging written and multimedia content to WRAL.com and all relevant social media platforms.
  • Regularly utilize social media to connect with the community, promote stories, and provide real-time updates.
  • Contribute regularly to the station’s YouTube, streaming, and OTT platforms with creative and impactful content.

Collaboration & Teamwork

  • Participate in daily editorial meetings and collaborate with producers, photojournalists, digital editors, and managers to shape daily coverage plans.
  • Coordinate with consumer producers and investigative team members to develop long-term, high-impact projects.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Essential Qualifications

  • Education: Bachelor's degree in Journalism, Communications, or a related field.
  • Experience: At least 3 years of experience in a newsroom reporting role with a focus on live, field, and investigative reporting.
  • Technical Skills:
    • Proficiency with video shooting equipment and non-linear editing systems (e.g., Edius, Premiere, Final Cut).
    • Strong command of AP style and journalistic best practices.
    • Familiarity with data journalism, spreadsheet analysis, and FOIA/public records processes is a plus.
  • Digital Fluency:
    • Proven ability to generate content for web, streaming, and social platforms.
    • Comfortable using tools like Chartbeat, CMS platforms, and social engagement analytics.

Key Competencies & Attributes

  • Unwavering curiosity and tenacity in pursuing truth and untold stories.
  • Strong editorial judgment, news instincts, and ethical standards.
  • Excellent storytelling skills and ability to simplify complex topics.
  • Ability to work independently and under pressure in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong organizational skills and flexibility to adapt to shifting priorities.
  • Professional appearance and comfort with irregular hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays as needed.

Benefits:
