Job description

PURPOSE OF CLASSIFICATION The purpose of this classification is to lead, direct, supervise and assist children and/or teens in structured group activities, educational programs, arts and crafts, team sports, off-site field trips, cooking projects and special events in a day camp setting. This classification is a temporary (seasonal) position and is not eligible for FRS participation. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS The following duties are normal for this position.

The omission of specific statements of the duties does not exclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related or a logical assignment for this classification. Other duties may be required and assigned. Lead and assist in the direction, supervision and organization of campers in a day camp environment; apply basic youth development principles in working with campers through communication, relationship development, respect for diversity, involvement and empowerment of youth.

Coordinate and participate in the development and implementation of program activities for campers including, but not limited to team sports, group games, arts and crafts, cooking projects, educational presentations, special events, silent games and off-site field trips; responsible for leading and assisting with teaching of all camp activities; actively participates in all program areas as assigned. Maintain high standards of health and safety in all activities for campers and staff both on site at the Community Center, during transportation to and from field trip locations and during off-site field trip activities; be aware of and implement safety guidelines; be alert to camper needs and assist them with personal and/or health problems; provide first aid as needed; be alert to equipment and facilities to ensure utilization, proper care and maintenance is adhered to; report repairs needed promptly to camp director; assist with and perform various maintenance duties related to cleanliness of Community Center. Assists campers with behavioral and/or physical needs which may include implementing behavior plans, recording data, redirecting campers, and using appropriate management techniques.

Ensure campers are properly supervised at all times while under the supervision of the Town of Jupiter. Provide positive role modeling for children and teens as well as other camp counselors and volunteers; follow and uphold all safety and security rules and procedures; set a good example to campers and others in regard to general camp procedures and practices including sanitation, schedule and sportsmanship; follow the Town of Jupiter disciplinary guidelines in order to redirect negative camper behavior; utilize conflict resolution techniques to resolve camper and/or counselor conflicts. Maintain positive relationship with outside vendors such as bus drivers, venue supervisors, field trip site managers and food vendors.

Conduct camper sign in and sign out at the beginning and end of each camp day; collect daily field trip fees from parents; ensure proper payment to off site vendors; reconcile daily collected fees with field trip location receipts and forward documentation as appropriate. Complete various forms, reports, correspondence including but not limited to incident/accident reports, behavior notes, schedule changes, parent notifications. Represent the camp when interacting with parents and community members; provide parents with appropriate feedback and information as needed for their campers to have a successful camp experience; follow safety and security protocols when campers are in public while presenting a positive image of the camp.

ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS Contribute to verbal and written evaluations and communication as requested. Participate enthusiastically in all camp activities, planning and leading those as assigned. Identify other tasks or duties that this position may be expected to perform but are not necessarily the primary focus of this position.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Must be available to work the entire duration of the Town of Jupiter camp program for which you are applying. Youth Camp Counselor- High School Diploma or G.E.D.; minimum of 3 months experience working with children of various ages Lead Counselor/Alternate Lead Counselor- High School Diploma or G.E.D.; minimum of 1 year work experience in youth camp or school-based program Site Supervisor- High School Diploma or G.E.D; minimum of 3 years work experience in youth camp or school-based program Camp Coordinator- Associates Degree; minimum of 3 years work experience in youth camp or school-based program Mandatory Counselor Orientation: Tuesday, June 2rd, 2026 @ 8am-5pm and Wednesday, June 3th, 2026 @ 8am-5pm Camp Dates: Monday, June 8th, 2026 through Friday, July 31st, 2026 **In compliance with Florida law, applicants for this position are subject to a background screening through the Florida Clearinghouse. Physical Ability:Requires ability to observe camper behavior, respond appropriately to situations requiring first aid; must be able to assist campers in an emergency (fire, evacuation, illness, injury) and possess strength and endurance required to maintain constant supervision of campers. Visual and Auditory Ability:requires ability to identify and response to environmental and other hazards related to the activity. Some physical requirements of a counselor position could be endurance including prolonged standing, some bending, stooping, walking long distances, hiking, climbing, stretching and swimming; required eye-hand coordination and manual dexterity to manipulate outdoor equipment and camp activities; requires normal range of hearing and eyesight to record, prepare, and communicate appropriate camper activities/programs and the ability to lift up to 50 lbs; requires daily exposure to the sun, heat and bugs.
