What is a nix?

Nix jobs typically refer to roles centered around using the Nix package manager and the Nix programming language. These positions often involve managing reproducible development environments, automating software deployment, and maintaining infrastructure using Nix. Professionals in these roles may work as DevOps engineers, system administrators, or software developers who leverage Nix to ensure consistency and reliability across systems. Nix jobs require a solid understanding of declarative configuration, package management, and often involve working with tools like NixOS and Nixpkgs.

What is the difference between Nix vs DevOps Engineer?

AspectNixDevOps Engineer
CredentialsTypically no specific certifications required, but knowledge of Nix package manager is essentialOften requires certifications like AWS, Azure, or Linux certifications
Work EnvironmentFocuses on package management, system configuration, and reproducible buildsInvolves automation, CI/CD pipelines, cloud infrastructure, and system deployment
Industry UsagePrimarily used in software development, system administration, and open-source projectsUsed across software development, IT operations, and cloud services

While Nix specializes in package management and reproducible system configurations, DevOps Engineers focus on automating deployment pipelines and infrastructure. Both roles require technical expertise but serve different aspects of software and system management.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals working with nix, and how can they be addressed?

Professionals working with Nix often encounter challenges related to its steep learning curve and the complexity of its declarative approach to package and configuration management. Navigating the unique syntax of the Nix language and understanding the build process can be initially daunting, especially for those transitioning from traditional package managers. Collaborating effectively within teams requires clear documentation and alignment on best practices for reproducible builds. To address these challenges, many teams invest time in knowledge sharing sessions, leverage community resources, and adopt established conventions to streamline onboarding and workflow.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as a nix engineer?

To thrive as a Nix engineer, you need a strong understanding of functional programming concepts, configuration management, and experience writing and maintaining Nix expressions. Familiarity with the Nix package manager, NixOS, and CI/CD tools, as well as relevant certifications or contributions to open-source Nix projects, are highly beneficial. Problem-solving, attention to detail, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for collaborating with teams and addressing complex deployment challenges. These skills ensure reliable, reproducible, and maintainable software environments, which are essential for efficient development and operations workflows.

We are looking for highly collaborative engineers that will bring significant expertise, experience, and energy to the team's endeavors
ABOUT THE JOB
Anduril is seeking an experienced Radar Software Engineer with at least 5 years of experience to contribute to the development of application-level software for our next-generation radar systems. This role focuses on building the software that powers radar applications-including mission software, data processing pipelines, user-facing tools, and system integration. The ideal candidate has a strong foundation in modern software development practices, experience with reproducible build and deployment environments using Nix and NixOS, and a passion for solving complex problems in the radar and sensor domain
WHAT YOU WILL DO
  • Design, develop, test, and maintain application-level software for radar systems, with a focus on maintainability, testability, reliability, and performance.
  • Build and enhance radar applications, including data processing workflows, mission-level software, configuration tools, and operator-facing interfaces.
  • Contribute to a scalable software platform with well-defined APIs that enable reusable building blocks adaptable for various radar products and applications.
  • Define and document APIs for component-to-component communication and for integration with external systems and third-party consumers.
  • Develop and maintain reproducible build, packaging, and deployment workflows using Nix to ensure consistency across development, test, and production environments.
  • Lead performance analysis and optimization of radar application software, focusing on efficient data handling and processing throughput.
  • Champion software development best practices, including coding standards, design patterns, version control, automated testing, and continuous integration/continuous deployment (CI/CD).
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams-including signal processing engineers, algorithm specialists, systems engineers, and product managers-to translate requirements into well-designed software.
  • Mentor junior engineers and contribute to technical decision-making across the team.
  • Continuously evaluate emerging technologies and industry trends in radar software, distributed systems, and sensor applications to drive innovation.
REQUIRED SKILLS
  • Experience: At least 5 years of professional software development experience.
  • Software Development Fundamentals: Strong understanding of software design principles, data structures, algorithms, and object-oriented programming.
  • Languages: Proficiency in C++. Python is nice-to-have.
  • Application Development: Proven experience designing and building application-level software, including modular components, services, or data processing pipelines.
  • Nix: Hands-on experience with Nix for reproducible builds, package management, development environments, and/or system configuration.
  • API Development: Experience designing and developing APIs for internal or external consumers.
  • Quality and Security Focus: Demonstrated experience with engineering practices that promote software reliability, maintainability, testability, and security (e.g., unit testing, code reviews, secure coding practices).
  • Collaboration & Communication: Excellent communication skills and the ability to work effectively within a cross-functional team.
  • Education: Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a related field.
DESIRED SKILLS
  • Radar or Sensor Domain: Familiarity with radar systems, signal processing concepts, or sensor data applications.
  • Distributed Systems: Experience building software that operates across multiple processes, services, or networked nodes.
  • Data Processing: Experience with data pipelines, streaming frameworks, or high-throughput data processing.
  • Middleware & Messaging: Exposure to messaging frameworks or middleware such as gRPC, Protobuf, ZeroMQ, DDS, or similar.
  • Containerization & DevOps: Experience with Docker, or modern CI/CD tooling.
  • Advanced Nix Usage: Experience authoring custom Nix derivations, flakes, overlays, or contributing to nixpkgs.
