Job description

WORK OBJECTIVE

This is highly skilled work in the maintenance and repair of large pumps, motors, compressors, and gasoline and diesel driven trucks and related heavy equipment. The employee of this class performs tasks in the mechanical repair and maintenance of light and heavy-duty trucks, transit buses, tractors, graders, fire trucks, pumps, gas compressors, heat exchangers, sanitation hydraulic packer trucks, and other related equipment. Employees work under general supervision using independent judgment and initiative as to method of repair after receiving work order. Must be available to work night, weekend and holiday shifts. Work is reviewed while in progress and at the completion of the job. This position reports to the Fleet Manager.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Performs general and major overhaul and repair work on light and heavy trucks, mowers, and other automotive or diesel, pumps, compressors, and mechanical equipment.
  • Utilizes advanced computerized diagnostic equipment and related software programs, as required, to diagnose issues and input information into computer work order systems.
  • Inspects, adjusts, and replaces necessary units and related parts including valves, pistons, main bearing assemblies, cooling, fuel and exhaust systems, bearings, bushings, and seals.
  • Repairs and overhauls brakes, transmissions, differentials, and front and rear axle assemblies.
  • Repairs and installs hydraulic controls.
  • Takes down, repairs, and reassembles air and gas compressors, pumps, and related equipment.
  • Inspects, repairs, overhauls, and assembles automotive electric equipment such as generators, distributors, magnetos, and starters.
  • Uses hand and power-driven tools and equipment such as grinders, fender hammers, sanders, drill presses, lathes, testing and welding equipment, and other garage and mechanical ship tools and equipment.
  • Responds to road emergencies and performs any necessary repairs; ensures adequate parts and supplies are at disposal at all times.
  • Attends classes and seminars as directed to maintain and enhance service and repair skills and to learn of technological changes in the trade.
  • Completes work orders and requisitions for needed parts.
  • Operates various equipment and vehicles in performance of duties.
  • May perform welding duties associated with tasks.
  • Performs other assigned duties as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • A.S.E. certified in heavy duty brakes and one other ASE ?T? certification required.
  • High school diploma or G.E.D. with 5 years of experience in automotive and light truck repair or 3 years of experience in heavy truck equipment repair.
  • Must possess a valid Florida ?CDL? Class B license or be able to obtain one within 90 days of employment.
  • Based on FMCSA regulations, applicants for employment and existing employees in positions requiring a CDL are subject to pre-employment, post-employment, and ongoing testing for controlled substances and alcohol as a condition of employment.

Exceptions to the minimum qualifications must be reviewed by the Human Resources Director and approved by the City Manager prior to job offer.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Considerable knowledge of the construction, assembly, adjustment, and maintenance of a wide variety of trucks, diesel motors, and other general and specific automotive and diesel equipment.
  • Considerable knowledge of the construction, assembly, adjustment, and maintenance of a wide variety of pumps and compressors and other specialized equipment.
  • Considerable knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade.
  • Considerable knowledge of diagnostic software programs such as Cummins Insite and Mack.
  • Considerable knowledge of all types of ship tools such as drills, pressers, grinders, micrometers, boring bars, reamers, brake relining, and drum grinding machines, and valve refacing and seat grinding tools.
  • Ability to provide outstanding levels of customer service reflecting the qualities of Responsiveness, Ownership, Respectfulness and Professionalism.
  • Ability to diagnose the more common defects of motors of motors in automotive equipment, pumps, turbines, and compressors and to detect by inspection any work or broken part or improperly adjusted part of assembly.
  • Ability to make simple estimates of time and materials.
  • Ability to keep records of repairs and service operations and to make reports.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions accurately; to read and understand maintenance manuals for all motors and equipment being maintained or repaired; and to read and interpret mechanical drawings, automotive diagrams, and wiring schematics on highly complicated electrical and charging systems.
  • Skilled in the application of methods and techniques used in the automotive and diesel mechanic craft and in the use and care of pertinent tools, equipment, and facilities.

ENVIRONMENTAL & PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Tasks involve the intermittent performance of physically demanding work, typically involving some combination of climbing ladders, reaching, bending, stooping, kneeling, crouching, standing and making continuous hand/arm movements. May also require lifting, carrying, pushing or pulling of objects and materials weighting 20-100 lbs.
  • Tasks are performed indoors/outdoors and due to the nature and location of the work, some tasks include the potential for prolonged exposure to disagreeable elements, noise, heat, humidity, pungent odors, and construction materials as examples.
  • Work is performed in both indoor and outdoor conditions, including exposure to disagreeable elements, noises, heat, humidity, cold, dust, fumes, pungent odors, construction materials, and inclement weather conditions.
