Job description

Principal Engineer, Photonics Reliability

Location: San Jose, CA (on-site)

Company Overview

Ayar Labs is shattering AI data bottlenecks by moving data at the speed of light. As pioneers of co‑packaged optics (CPO), we use light instead of electricity to move data faster, farther, and with a fraction of the energy needed to fuel the explosive growth of AI models. Backed by industry giants such as NVIDIA, AMD, and Intel, and manufactured in partnership with the world’s leading semiconductor ecosystem, our co‑packaged optics solution is key to unleashing next‑generation AI scale‑up architectures.

Job Summary

We are seeking an experienced Reliability Engineer to conduct comprehensive failure analysis investigations, identify root causes, and implement corrective actions to enhance product reliability. The role collaborates closely with cross‑functional teams to drive product quality and customer satisfaction.

Key Responsibilities
  • Conduct detailed failure analysis investigations, including physical failure analysis (PFA) and electrical failure analysis (EFA).
  • Utilize advanced analytical techniques such as scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X‑ray spectroscopy (EDX), focused ion beam (FIB), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) to identify failure mechanisms.
  • Develop and implement corrective actions to prevent recurrence of failures.
  • Employ statistical analysis and problem‑solving techniques to identify root causes of failures.
  • Collaborate with design and process engineering teams to implement design and process changes addressing root causes.
Technical Expertise
  • Stay up-to-date with the latest advancements in failure analysis techniques and tools.
  • Mentor and train junior engineers in failure analysis methodologies.
Data Analysis and Reporting
  • Analyze failure data to identify trends and patterns.
  • Generate comprehensive failure analysis reports and presentations.
  • Communicate complex technical information to a wide range of audiences, including engineering, management, and customers.
Basic Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Materials Science, Physics, or a related field.
  • 10+ years of industry experience in semiconductor failure analysis.
  • Understanding of semiconductor device physics, failure mechanisms, and materials science.
  • Proficiency in advanced analytical techniques, such as X‑ray, CSAM, TDR, FIB, SEM, and TEM.
  • Experience with statistical analysis and data mining techniques.
  • Experience with failure analysis software and tools.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering, Materials Science, Physics, or a related field.
  • Experience with advanced failure analysis techniques, such as transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and atom probe tomography (APT).
  • Experience with fault isolation technique, ATE, and Scan/ATPG debug.
  • Experience in Silicon Photonics and failure analysis of photonic integrated circuits.

Annual Salary Range: $200,000 - $240,000
