Job description

Medical Lab Technician

Night Shift

The Medical Lab Technician (MLT) under general supervision will perform chemical, microscopic and bacteriological tests to obtain data for use in diagnosis and treatment of disease. Collect specimens from patients as ordered, analyze specimens, and record results as well as communicate same with appropriate hospital staff and collaborate with other departments to integrate lab services in patient care. Adjust test procedures for specific patient requirements (adult, geriatric, pediatric), interpret data to identify age-specific needs for patient care, and report abnormal or unusual test results. Monitor lab equipment and tests results produced, provide technical guidance, and evaluate new testing methods and procedures. Perform routine preventive maintenance on assigned equipment per established schedule; verify instrument functioning, checking and calibrating specific lab instruments; and document data and record any repairs, replacement and maintenance in instrument logs. Ensure standards of quality of control are maintained, monitor staff compliance with quality control and safety and governmental regulatory standards, and inform director of any problems with compliance program. Perform quality control studies to ensure accuracy of clinical procedure / data and adhere to clinical quality control standards. Conduct periodic checks to ensure availability and quality of chemicals, regulate supply inventories, and make purchasing requisitions. Respond to stat orders as required. Assist with orientation of new employees and medical technology students. Attend and participate in departmental meetings, in-services, and quality improvement program.

Minimum Requirements: Associate Degree or equivalent in Medical Lab Technician. Certification from the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP) within 12 months of employment.
