What Does a NICU Speech Pathologist Do?
A neonatal intensive care unit or NICU speech pathologist works with newborn babies. Your duties and responsibilities as a neonatal speech pathologist revolve around assessing the infant for conditions that could lead to swallowing disorders that affect the feeding of the baby. After diagnosis, you work with other members of the hospital care team to come up with a plan for treatment and feeding and to educate the parent of the patient about the condition and how to deal with difficulties related to the baby's intake of food and milk.
