Job description

POSITION OVERVIEW:

The Senior DevOps Engineer supports the Department of State’s mission by enhancing system reliability, scalability, and deployment efficiency through the design and implementation of automated CI/CD pipelines and infrastructure solutions. This role is responsible for developing and maintaining code deployment pipelines, infrastructure-as-code (IaC) frameworks, and configuration management tools to support application lifecycle management in alignment with Departmental goals and procedures.


Working as part of the Personnel and Training Applications CI/CD team, the engineer collaborates with developers and technical stakeholders to implement automation, streamline manual processes, and maintain secure, stable environments across cloud and on-premises systems. The role leverages technologies such as PowerShell, Bash, Ansible, and Azure DevOps to support pipeline development, system configuration, and ongoing environment updates, ensuring consistent delivery and alignment with evolving cybersecurity and operational requirements.


KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Implement CI/CD pipelines to meet business requirements using relevant technologies such as PowerShell, Bash, or Ansible
  • Modify and create flows in Azure DevOps server via Yaml pipelines
  • Collaborate on solutions to novel requirements
  • Maintain and develop Desired State Configuration templates
  • Maintain and operate Infrastructure-as-Code pipelines
  • Identify and implement automation to supplant manual tasks
  • Ensure periodic environment updates based on ongoing cybersecurity needs
  • Provide DevOps leadership and engineering utilizing tools and scripts to automate common tasks (on-prem or in the cloud).
  • Utilize tools and scripts to automate common tasks.
  • Identify and implement process improvements, such as automation, streamlining, and alignment with DevOps/DevSecOps best practices.
  • Experience with configuration management tools, such as Puppet, Chef, Ansible, Red Hat Satellite, SCCM, WSUS, or Phire.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to communicate clearly and succinctly in written and oral presentations.
  • Experience with Azure Cloud technologies with working knowledge of AWS.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology/Systems, or related field,
    OR equivalent number of years of experience
  • Must be U.S. Citizen with an active Secret clearance (required)
  • 5+ years’ DevOps experience
  • Experience developing Azure-based automation pipelines
  • Measured Experience in Windows-based environments
  • Familiarity with Linux-based systems
  • Measured experience in both cloud-based and network restricted environments
  • Attention to detail and ability to work independently with broad guidance
  • Works in a professional setting and interacts regularly with peers


Physical Demands:

While performing the duties of the job, the incumbent will be exposed to normal demands associated with an office environment. Ability to work on a computer for long periods, and communicate with individuals by telephone, email, and face to face. This position requires the incumbent to have the ability to stand, walk, sit, use hands to finger, handle or feel objects, tools, or controls, reach with hands and arms, talk, and hear. The employee must be able to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust and focus.
