Job description

JOB TITLE: General Dentist
Supervisor: Health and Human Services Director
Status Temporary
Schedule: 4-6 Months
Location: Fulton, MI

POSITION SUMMARY
Under the direction of the Dental Director, this position is responsible for maintaining the dental clinic at the NHBP Health and Human Services Department. The incumbent is responsible to support the Dental Director with the operation of dental services offered at NHBP. As a key member of the NHBP Health and Human Services team, this position is responsible for collaborating with providers, management and dental team to provide the highest quality of patient care possible. This position will provide a program of primary (and in selected instances, secondary care) and preventive dental care. The General Dentist supervises the dental staff in their clinic and represents the dental staff to the Dental Director. The General Dentist provides dental advice and counsel to the Dental Director.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
The Nottawaseppi Huron Band of the Potawatomi reserves the right to change, amend, add, delete and otherwise assign any and all duties, responsibilities and position titles as it deems necessary to meet the needs of the government.
  1. Examines individuals requesting care, diagnoses their dental/oral conditions, prescribes and carries out, or directs others in carrying out, appropriate dental/oral treatment, or refers individuals for specialty consultation or treatment in conformance with approved clinical protocols and guidelines.
  2. Records patient-dentist transactions as they occur in the patient’s dental record so that the dental record accurately and completely reflects the nature of the contact the condition of the patient and the care or treatment provided. In addition, shall complete referrals, data collections instruments and other records or paper works as shall be required from time to time.
  3. Educates individuals in the nature of oral health related conditions and in the general promotion of oral health related disease prevention.
  4. Assists in the provision of continuing education, on-the-job training, and the orientation of staff as requested.
  5. Designs, develops, and implements appropriate dental policies, protocols and procedures, which are in compliance with the most current accepted professional standards, with the Dental Director.
  6. Assists in the preparation of an operating budget for the dental unit and in conjunction with the Dental Director and oversees compliance with the dental unit’s budget.
  7. May assist in preparing special grant and project budgets as required to meet the goals of NHBP in relation to dental services.
  8. Participates in short and long term program planning for the dental unit and department including development of goals and objectives.
  9. Provides consultation to the Dental Director and Journey to Wellness Committee regarding dental and oral health issues.
  10. Travels when necessary to fulfill the department needs and attends meetings as necessary to represent NHBP and/or the Health and Human Services Department/dental unit.
  11. Assists in developing the department’s dental health care plan.
  12. Assists in the coordination and integration of the dental programs and services with other department programs and services for the welfare of the patients.
  13. Performs evaluations of their dental staff as directed by the policy of NHBP.
  14. Supervises, advises, counsels and disciplines all dental staff in in accordance to NHBP policy and consultation with the Dental Director.
  15. Approves leave requests for dental staff.
  16. Responsible for personal as well as dental clinic compliance with all applicable Tribal, federal, state, and department rules, regulations, protocols and procedures governing the practice of dentistry and the clinical provision of dental care as well as those relating to, but not limited to, personnel issues, work place safety, public health and confidentiality.
  17. Participates in recruitment/retention activities as necessary.
  18. In the absence of the Dental Director and under the direction of the NHBP Health and Human Services Director perform the Dental Director functions.
  19. As directed by the Dental Director, performs other related and/or necessary tasks to achieve organizational and programmatic goals and objectives.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
An applicant’s education, training and experience must be sufficient to demonstrate that the applicant possesses the ability to successfully perform each of the essential functions.
The requirements listed below are generally representative of the education, experience, and skills and/or ability required to enable one to successfully perform the essential functions associated with his position:
  1. Graduation from an accredited dental school with an unrestricted license to practice dentistry in the State of Michigan.
  2. Completion of an accredited general practice residency program.
  3. Possess a DEA license.
  4. Requires a comprehensive knowledge of primary dental care in outpatient settings.
  5. Knowledge of the principles and practice of modern dentistry as related to public health organizations and community health programs as well as current social and economic problems pertaining to public health and their impact on primary health care.
  6. Must be able to creatively work with other health care professionals from a variety of disciplines to achieve maximal productivity and programmatic effectiveness while continuously promoting the growth and development of fellow professionals, exercising appropriate supervisory control and displaying good work judgment.
  7. Able to understand, gain knowledge and appreciate the difference of Native American culture and customs.
  8. Must maintain a valid driver's license with good driving record; GSA certifiable.
  9. Must be able to travel.
  10. Must be able to successfully complete and pass a comprehensive background investigation and drug screening; must not have been found guilty of, or pled guilty or no contest to, any felony or misdemeanor offense under federal, state or Tribal law involving crimes of violence, sexual assault, molestation, prostitution, or other crimes against persons, or offenses committed against children; must be able to successfully pass a drug screening.
  11. Ability to become CPR/First Aid certified as training is available
  12. Ability to maintain strict confidentiality, including HIPAA requirements.
  13. Excellent interpersonal/human relation skills.
  14. Must possess strong administrative, organizational, and communication skills, both verbal and written.
  15. Demonstrated exceptional computer skills, including word processing and spreadsheets, and knowledge of other office equipment required.
  16. Strong ability to organize and maintain electronic and physical files.
  17. Ability to read and interpret documents.
  18. Ability to be self-directed and be an excellent problem solver.
  19. Ability to work well in team centered environment with or without immediate supervision.
  20. Ability to work with constant interruptions and organize/prioritize duties.
  21. Professional demeanor and appearance.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  1. Administrative, management, and budget development experience.
  2. Previous experience providing performing general dentistry in a Tribal health setting.
  3. Minimum of five years clinical experience preferred.
  4. Medicare / Medicaid provider numbers.
  5. Knowledge of Dentrix Software.
SECURITY SENSITIVE

INDIAN PREFERENCE
Tribal preference will be applied in accordance with the NHBP Indian Preference in Employment Code which requires that preference in employment be afforded to NHBP members, spouse/parents of NHBP members and Native Americans who meet the minimum qualifications and can successfully perform the essential functions for the position.
