How much do next generation sequencing jobs pay per year?
What are the typical daily responsibilities of someone working in a Next Generation Sequencing role?
Professionals in Next Generation Sequencing typically spend their days preparing and processing biological samples, operating sequencing instruments, and analyzing genomic data. They are responsible for troubleshooting technical issues, maintaining laboratory equipment, and ensuring quality control throughout the sequencing workflow. Collaboration with cross-functional teams—such as bioinformaticians, clinicians, and research scientists—is common to interpret sequencing results and contribute to project goals. This role also involves detailed record-keeping and adherence to regulatory or laboratory standards, making organization and communication important aspects of the job.
What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Next Generation Sequencing position, and why are they important?
To excel in a Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) role, you need a strong background in molecular biology, genomics, and data analysis, often supported by a degree in a life science field. Proficiency with NGS platforms (such as Illumina or Oxford Nanopore), laboratory automation tools, and bioinformatics software is highly valued, alongside relevant certifications in genomics or molecular diagnostics. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective teamwork and communication skills set successful professionals apart. These competencies ensure high-quality sequencing results, efficient workflow, and productive collaboration in fast-paced research or clinical environments.
What is a Next Generation Sequencing job?
A Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) job involves working with advanced DNA and RNA sequencing technologies to analyze genetic material. Professionals in this field may design experiments, prepare biological samples, operate sequencing instruments, and interpret genomic data. Roles can vary from research scientists and bioinformaticians to lab technicians and data analysts. NGS is widely used in medicine, agriculture, and biotechnology for applications such as disease research, personalized medicine, and evolutionary studies. Strong skills in molecular biology, computational analysis, and data interpretation are typically required.

Job description
A cover letter is required for consideration for this position and should be attached as the first page of your resume. The cover letter should address your specific interest in the position and outline skills and experience that directly relate to this position.
Mission Statement
Michigan Medicine improves the health of patients, populations and communities through excellence in education, patient care, community service, research and technology development, and through leadership activities in Michigan, nationally and internationally. Our mission is guided by our Strategic Principles and has three critical components; patient care, education and research that together enhance our contribution to society.
Job Summary
Join the expanding Michigan Center for Translational Pathology laboratory to work in the clinical research team. Our CLIA-certified laboratory uses high-throughput technologies to understand the mechanisms of cancer progression and to develop new prognostic/diagnostic biomarkers of cancer. The laboratory provides enormous resources and opportunities for an individual to learn traditional cellular/molecular techniques, as well as state-of-the-art technologies, including Next Generation Sequencing and developing technologies in cancer genomics, such as Nanopore long-read sequencing. The candidate will work primarily with a group of senior laboratory personnel to assist and collaborate with researchers within the laboratory and beyond.
Responsibilities*
Detailed duties include: Performing molecular and cellular experiments on the mechanisms of cancer progression and therapy resistance, particularly in prostate, breast, myeloma, and rare cancers. Experiments will include molecular cloning of genetic aberrations identified through next-generation sequencing followed by expression and establishment of cell culture model systems. CRISPR technologies will be used to establish knockout and conditional knockout models. The applicant will learn how to generate next-generation sequencing libraries spanning a range of technologies, from cell-free DNA to ChIP-Seq.
This position is ideal for individuals who are interested in leading projects. The work has the potential to lead to discoveries that can directly translate into the clinic. This position will also co-ordinate research projects with other staff and undergraduate students.
Participate in Mi-ONCOSEQ CLIA clinical sequencing lab activities, nucleic acid extraction from blood, bone marrow, frozen tissue, buccal swabs, and FFPE, cell selection using antibody-conjugated magnetic beads, prepare samples through PCR and gel electrophoresis for sequencing, check the sample quality via bioanalyzer and QPCR, run the next-gen sequencing platform, validate the potential candidate genes by Sanger sequencing and QPCR, write internal research reports summarizing research activities, participate in weekly laboratory meetings, and interact as a team member with laboratory personnel. Write and develop CLIA SOPs, carry out high demand next generation sequencing procedures, independently run experiments and interpret results, help with manuscript writing and organizing data, and contribute to general lab management and CLIA clinical test compliance.
Required Qualifications*
Education: Bachelor's degree in Molecular Biology, Genetics, Biochemistry, or a related biological science.
Experience: Minimum of 1-2 years of hands-on experience in a molecular biology laboratory (post-undergraduate experience preferred). Familiarity with quantitative PCR techniques, molecular cloning and cell culture. Minimum of 4-5 years of experience in a related field.
Required Skills: Proven ability to master complex, multi-step protocols with high reproducibility and attention to detail. Willingness to learn new concepts and technologies. Demonstrated ability to work with others in a collaborative environment. Strong organizational skills, good record-keeping skills, and an interest in basic and applied cancer research.
Desired Qualifications*
Master's degree in biological or health related fields.
Experience in cell culture, CRISPR screens, Western blotting, and multiomic technologies desirable.
Motivation to lead individual research projects.
