What is a Registered Behavior Technician (RBT)?

Registered Behavior Technicians (RBTs) are paraprofessionals certified by the Behavior Analyst Certification Board (BACB) to implement behavior intervention plans designed by Board Certified Behavior Analysts (BCBAs). RBTs primarily work with individuals with autism and other developmental disorders, helping them develop social, communication, and life skills. They collect data, follow strict protocols, and provide direct therapy under supervision. Becoming an RBT requires completing specific training, passing a competency assessment, and maintaining certification through ongoing supervision and continuing education.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as a new Registered Behavior Technician (RBT)?

To thrive as a new Registered Behavior Technician (RBT), you need a high school diploma, completion of 40 hours of training, and passing the RBT certification exam to demonstrate foundational knowledge in applied behavior analysis (ABA). Familiarity with data collection tools, behavior intervention plans, and clinical recording systems is essential. Strong communication, patience, and the ability to follow instructions precisely are crucial soft skills for working effectively with clients and supervising BCBAs. These skills and qualifications are vital for delivering consistent, effective behavioral interventions and ensuring client progress and safety.

What are common challenges new Registered Behavior Technicians (RBTs) face during their first months on the job?

New RBTs often encounter challenges such as adapting to diverse client needs, mastering data collection methods, and effectively implementing behavior intervention plans. Building rapport with clients and maintaining consistent communication with supervising Board Certified Behavior Analysts (BCBAs) are also key hurdles. However, most organizations provide ongoing training, mentorship, and team support to help new RBTs develop confidence and competence in their daily responsibilities.

Job description

Grow your clinical skills. Partner with families. Make a lasting impact.

At FirstSteps for Kids, our Lead Instructors are experienced Registered Behavior Technicians or Behavior Technicians who work side by side with in-person BCBAs to deliver exceptional ABA services and meaningful outcomes for children and families.

Unlike many ABA providers, our FirstSteps BCBAs are actively involved in treatment, providing frequent in-person coaching, collaboration, and support. You'll continue growing your own clinical skills while helping families and supporting new Clinical Trainees as they begin their careers.

The Impact You'll Make

Every day, you'll help children build life-changing skills, from first words and friendships to greater independence at home, school, and in their communities. Just as importantly, you'll help families experience the joy and confidence that comes from watching their child achieve milestones they once thought were out of reach. By partnering with caregivers and teaching them how to continue their child's learning outside of therapy, you'll help create meaningful progress that lasts far beyond each session.

What You'll Do
  • Deliver high-quality ABA therapy in client homes, their schools, and in our beautiful center settings.
  • Partner closely with in-person BCBAs to implement individualized treatment plans and continue growing your own clinical skills.
  • Coach parents and caregivers so they feel confident supporting their child's learning and carrying programs into everyday routines.
  • Develop new Clinical Trainees using Behavior Skills Training (BST), fostering the clinical skills, confidence, and professionalism that define FirstSteps care.
  • Model FirstSteps values through teamwork, professionalism, positivity, and accountability.
  • Ensure accurate data collection and consistent implementation of treatment plans.
We're Looking For Someone Who
  • Is an experienced RBT (or BT) who enjoys working directly with children and families.
  • Wants to continue learning from experienced, in-person BCBAs.
  • Enjoys teaching and encouraging new clinical team members.
  • Thrives in a collaborative, people-first environment.
  • Shares our commitment to compassionate, evidence-based care.
Why FirstSteps?
  • Work alongside experienced, in-person BCBA Case Supervisors
  • Ongoing clinical mentorship and professional development
  • BCBA supervision opportunities for eligible graduate students pursuing the BCBA credential
  • Competitive pay with multiple annual performance review opportunities
  • PTO and Sick Time
  • PTO for FirstSteps observed holidays plus an additional floating holiday of your choice
  • Health, dental, vision, and 401(k) with generous company contribution
  • Mileage reimbursement and paid drive time
  • Monthly Data Stipend
  • Employment Assistance Program
  • Wellness Incentives
  • Access to discounted Pet Insurance
  • Employee referral bonus program
  • Employee discounts on movies, theme parks, hotels, etc.
  • Team-building events and a supportive, collaborative culture

If you're ready to grow your career while making a lasting difference for children and families, we'd love to meet you.
