About the Position:

The Mining Process Engineer designs and builds intelligent control systems that transform plant performance at mining and mineral processing operations. Working across the full control stack, from field instrumentation and PLCs to SCADA, advanced process control (APC), and data historian systems. This role combines hands-on programming with real-world process optimisation to deliver measurable results for our clients.

Specific Responsibilities:

  • Use correct methods in accordance with established procedures and schedules while ensuring analytical quality;

  • Observe established safety regulations and comply with all ALS health and safety policies and procedures;

  • Develop, commission, and optimise PLC, SCADA, and advanced process control (APC) systems;

  • Diagnose and troubleshoot control system faults and performance issues;

  • Write and maintain applications in Python, C/C++, Bash, SQL, and other scripting languages;

  • Configure and commission historian, analytics, and reporting systems;

  • Contribute to continuous improvement and innovation across projects;

  • Maintain accurate technical documentation, drawings, and version control;

  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Proficiency in PLC and SCADA/HMI programming across any major platform;

  • Understanding of process control in mineral processing or mining environments;

  • Hands-on familiarity with industrial networks and communications protocols;

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving mindset with excellent attention to detail;

  • Ability to work independently on complex systems and collaborate effectively with plant operators and engineers;

  • Experience with Linux-based environments (Arch Linux experience highly regarded);

  • Experience with APC, data analytics, historians, and data visualisation tools (asset);

  • PCB design or microcontroller experience (asset).

Required Qualifications:

  • Degree in Engineering or Computer Science (Electrical, Mechatronics, or related field);

  • 5+ years experience designing, testing, and commissioning industrial control systems;

Physical Demands:

  • Ability to sit at a desk and perform general office work, including periodic sedentary responsibilities;

  • Manual dexterity to perform intricate and/or repetitive tasks;

  • Wear issued personal protective equipment (PPE) when required on client sites;

  • This role involves a mix of office-based engineering (Monday-Friday, 8-hour days) and client site commissioning on FIFO rosters (8/6, 4/3, or 2/2), with typical site shifts of 12 hours; domestic and international travel required.

  • You may be exposed to unpleasant odours and industrial hazards at client processing facilities.
