The Opportunity:
The Mill Technical Manager provides technical support to daily manufacturing operations by having overall responsibility for the personnel safety, environmental impact, quality, cost, and performance for the paper machines within the mill facility. In this position you will lead and coordinate efforts and activities utilizing your knowledge and experience to achieve key performance metrics that support overall mill and company goals. The Mill Technical Manager reports to the General Manager.
How You will impact Smurfit Westrock:
  • Manage facility approved chemical inventory and Hazard Communication Program
  • Manager of mill quality program and technical customer service

  • Mill contact for technical customer service.
  • Coordinate with sales and company technical service groups to manage quality and product certification issues.
  • Manage mill manufacturing specifications and quality records
  • Manage quality claims investigation and resolution.
  • Maintain operation and calibration of paperboard testing equipment.
  • Plays lead role in hosting customer site visits and audits
  • Provide technical support to production and maintenance departments

Other responsibilities to include:
Mill Environmental Coordinator
  • Coordinate and manage all mill environmental permits and programs.
    Major areas include NPDES, stormwater (SWPPP), air emissions, SPCC, chemical management and reporting, hazardous waste, pollution and spill prevention, and waste minimization.
  • Point of contact for paper and local authorities.
  • Manage all aspects of environmental reporting, permitting, and record keeping.
  • Lead facility contact for regulatory visits or inspections, and program audits.

Site Product Stewardship Coordinator
  • Responsible for ensuring product safety, compliance, and that customer expectations are met.
  • Manage and respond to customer inquiries and requests related to the areas of product safety, regulatory compliance, customer requirements, or other issues related to the use of our products.
  • Manage facility good manufacturing program including approval and control of raw materials, operational controls related to housekeeping and food safety, product traceability and recall, routine analytical and microbiological testing of paperboard, and maintaining records and documentation.

Site Forestry Certification Coordinator
  • Overall responsibility for facility aspects of maintaining multi-site certifications.
  • Conducts annual training and internal program audits.
  • Provide technical assistance to the manufacturing operation

  • Be an operational resource by providing technical expertise.
  • Manage paperboard coating formulation and preparation process
  • Overall responsibility for mill process chemical applications and use.
  • Approval and execution of machine trials for process improvement and/or cost reduction.
  • Assist in ISO 9001 certification audits
  • Quality Metrics
  • Water treatment plant metrics
  • Develop and maintain methods to track process chemical usage and costs
  • Provide facility wide training for all mill employees as necessary for all applicable topics.
  • Monitor pertinent quality and operating data, analyze and resolve problems, and continually explore process changes to improve product quality and/or reduce operating costs. Develop and implement systems to maintain improvements.
