Job description

Join us as we change healthcare for the better.

OceanMD, a WELL Health Company, is the leading provider of EMR-integrated Patient Engagement and eReferral tools in Canada, playing a critical role in millions of patient visits and thousands of referrals every week. Our digital healthcare solutions empower patients and physicians to overcome the barriers preventing the timely delivery of healthcare services. By replacing paper forms with digital tools, we give patients and providers secure ways to connect, share health information, and update patient records. Our tools:

  • Empower patients to share health information with their physician before, during, and after visits, helping to ensure health records are up-to-date and accurate while improving patient care.
  • Meet the growing demand for digital solutions with online booking and secure messaging that improves the patient’s experience, reduces the need for unnecessary phone calls, and makes clinics more efficient.
  • Improve access to care by replacing faxes, displaying wait times, and reducing the time to process and access specialist referrals.

Who we need

Reporting to the Vice President, Research and Development, we are hiring a Senior Software Developer to join our collaborative engineering team. As our new Senior Software Developer, you will play a key role in designing, building, and evolving the software that powers patient engagement and eReferral solutions used by healthcare providers across Canada. Working across the full software development lifecycle, you will combine hands-on development with solution design, technical leadership, and mentorship, partnering closely with Product Managers and fellow developers to deliver high-quality software every sprint. You will lead the technical direction of larger initiatives, guiding projects that may span multiple sprints or several months, collaborating with Product Managers from early concept through delivery while helping the team balance thoughtful design with pragmatic execution. Beyond writing code, you will help shape technical direction, contribute to architectural decisions, support the growth of your teammates, and build solutions that make accessing healthcare simpler and more connected for millions of Canadians.

This is a full-time hybrid role based in our Toronto office, with an expectation of approximately three days per week onsite.

What’s in it for you

Technical leadership without leaving the code. You want to solve complex engineering challenges while remaining deeply hands-on. As a Senior Software Developer, you will influence architectural decisions, contribute to solution design, and help shape the team's technical direction, balancing long-term thinking with pragmatic delivery. Your expertise will be valued not only for the code you write, but for the technical judgment, mentorship, and collaborative leadership you bring to every sprint. Rather than managing people, you'll lead through technical influence, helping shape solutions, supporting teammates, and earning greater ownership through your expertise.

Collaborative engineering culture. Our development team is intentionally flat, highly collaborative, and driven by shared ownership. You'll work alongside experienced developers who value thoughtful technical discussions, constructive code reviews, and helping one another succeed. Whether you're unblocking a teammate, refining a design, or sharing knowledge during our monthly learning days, you'll be part of a team that believes the best solutions come from working together. Success isn't measured by individual output alone, it's measured by how you help the entire team succeed.

Purpose in your work. Every feature you build helps improve how patients, physicians, and specialists connect across Canada's healthcare system. From expanding digital referrals to enhancing patient engagement, your work will directly contribute to technology that simplifies access to care for millions of Canadians while solving meaningful technical problems at scale.

Opportunity to keep growing. You'll have the autonomy to explore new ideas, experiment with emerging technologies, and continuously strengthen your craft. We encourage curiosity, invest dedicated time for learning and innovation, and create opportunities to deepen your expertise while taking on increasingly complex technical challenges and broader ownership across our platform. Our team is intentionally flat, so growth comes through tackling more complex technical problems, leading larger initiatives, and continuously expanding your skills.

How you will make an impact

  • Build software that improves access to healthcare. You will design, develop, and enhance features that support OceanMD's patient engagement and eReferral platform, creating secure, reliable, and scalable solutions that help patients and healthcare providers connect more effectively. Working across the software development lifecycle, you will contribute from design through implementation and delivery, helping advance technology used in millions of patient interactions across Canada.
  • Collaborate to deliver high-quality solutions. You will work within three-week Agile sprints, partnering with developers and product managers to turn priorities into well-designed, thoughtfully implemented features. You will actively participate in sprint planning, daily stand-ups, code reviews, and testing, helping maintain the high quality and reliability of our platform while proactively helping teammates overcome blockers, balancing workload across the team, and ensuring every sprint commitment is delivered successfully.
  • Lead technical solution design. You will partner with Product Managers and fellow developers to translate business priorities into scalable technical solutions. You'll lead architectural discussions for larger initiatives, guide design decisions across multiple sprints, evaluate trade-offs, and help the team collectively refine ideas before implementation. You understand that the best solutions are developed collaboratively and enjoy building on the ideas of others rather than working in isolation.
  • Learn, experiment, and share knowledge. You'll take advantage of dedicated monthly learning days to explore emerging technologies, investigate engineering challenges, or build something entirely new. You'll share your learning with the wider team, helping strengthen our collective expertise while continually expanding your own.

What you bring

  • The technical expertise. You have experience building and delivering scalable, production-ready software across the full software development lifecycle. You are comfortable working across modern application architectures and have strong experience developing with Java and Spring alongside modern web technologies such as JavaScript and Vue.js. While experience with our technology stack is valuable, we're equally interested in engineers with strong object-oriented fundamentals who can explain the concepts behind the technologies they've used and quickly apply those principles in new environments. Experience with MongoDB and Agile development practices will help you make an immediate impact.
  • The architectural mindset. You think beyond the immediate solution, considering scalability, maintainability, security, and long-term performance. You enjoy collaborating on technical design, evaluating trade-offs, and making pragmatic decisions that balance business priorities with sound engineering principles. You're comfortable acting as the technical lead on larger initiatives, partnering with Product Managers from early planning through successful delivery.
  • The ability to elevate others. You lead through influence rather than authority. You enjoy mentoring developers, sharing knowledge through code reviews and technical discussions, and helping teammates solve complex challenges. You're the kind of developer who willingly pauses your own work to help unblock someone else because you understand that the team's success comes before individual accomplishments. You recognize that building a strong engineering team is just as important as building great software.
  • The curiosity to keep improving. You're energized by learning. Rather than relying on familiar approaches, you actively seek opportunities to explore new technologies, improve existing processes, and experiment with new ideas. You enjoy investigating industry trends, pursuing independent learning projects, and sharing what you've learned with others.
  • The collaborative approach. You thrive in environments built on trust, transparency, and shared ownership. You welcome constructive feedback, enjoy collaborative design discussions, and see every technical proposal as the beginning of a conversation rather than the final answer. You're comfortable challenging ideas respectfully, building on the contributions of others, and helping create solutions that are stronger because they were developed together.

Nice to have
Experience with healthcare technology, electronic medical records (EMRs), regulated SaaS products, or MongoDB would be an asset. Experience using AI-assisted development tools is welcome, but you rely on strong engineering fundamentals—not AI—to solve technical problems. Most importantly, you bring curiosity, collaborative leadership, and a genuine interest in using technology to improve healthcare.

Compensation

The salary range for this position is $120,000–$130,000 CAD. Compensation is determined based on several factors, including your experience, qualifications, skills, and the needs of the organization. At OceanMD, we are committed to fair and equitable compensation and aim to provide a competitive salary that reflects the value and expertise you bring to the role.

What you can expect from our hiring process:

  • A virtual interview with a Talent Advisor to discuss your interest in the role and your experience. The conversation will be recorded using BrightHire, an AI-powered video interview tool. More details will be shared when you are invited to interview.
  • An in-person technical panel interview with 2–3 senior members of the Engineering team. This conversation will focus on your technical experience, approach to software development, problem-solving, and how you collaborate with others to design and build high-quality software.
  • A final interview with senior cross-functional leaders focused on cultural alignment, your interest in OceanMD's mission, and how you would contribute to the team and the organization.
