What is a neuropsychology practicum student?

A Neuropsychology Practicum Student is a graduate-level trainee who is gaining supervised clinical experience in neuropsychology, often as part of their doctoral program in psychology. These students work under the supervision of licensed neuropsychologists, learning how to assess, diagnose, and help treat individuals with brain injuries or neurological conditions. Their responsibilities typically involve administering neuropsychological assessments, scoring tests, observing patient interviews, and sometimes participating in feedback sessions. The practicum is a critical step in their training, preparing them for future internships, postdoctoral fellowships, and eventual licensure.

What kinds of responsibilities can a neuropsychology practicum student expect during a typical week?

As a Neuropsychology Practicum Student, you can expect to be involved in a variety of responsibilities such as administering and scoring neuropsychological assessments, observing patient interviews, and assisting with case conceptualization under close supervision. You'll also participate in regular team meetings, review relevant literature, and may contribute to report writing and feedback sessions. Collaboration with supervisors, other students, and clinical staff is common, providing valuable opportunities to develop clinical skills and professional communication.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a neuropsychology practicum student, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Neuropsychology Practicum Student, you need foundational knowledge in psychology or neuroscience, relevant coursework, and enrollment in a graduate program. Familiarity with neuropsychological assessment tools, standardized test batteries, and electronic documentation systems is typically required. Strong observational skills, ethical judgment, and effective communication help you build rapport with clients and collaborate with supervisors. These skills are crucial for accurate assessment, professional growth, and delivering high-quality client care in clinical settings.

What is the difference between Neuropsychology Practicum Student vs Neuropsychologist?

AspectNeuropsychology Practicum StudentNeuropsychologist
CredentialsEnrolled in graduate program, gaining supervised experienceDoctoral degree (PhD or PsyD), licensure required
Work EnvironmentAcademic settings, clinics, research labs under supervisionIndependent clinical practice, hospitals, private clinics
Employer & IndustryUniversities, hospitals, research institutionsHealthcare facilities, private practices, hospitals

The main difference is that a Neuropsychology Practicum Student is still in training, gaining supervised experience, while a Neuropsychologist is a licensed professional providing independent clinical services. Practicum students focus on learning and observation, whereas neuropsychologists diagnose and treat patients independently.

Job description

Cleveland Clinics Neurological Institute announces a search for a clinical neuropsychologist with specialization in pediatric neuropsychology to join our dynamic and growing Neuropsychology section. The successful candidate will join the staff of the Neuropsychology Section at the Cleveland Clinic, which currently consists of 17 neuropsychologists, 2 postdoctoral residents, practicum students, and 15 psychometrists.

This clinical position is within our pediatric neuropsychology service, which serves patients with a broad range of issues, including neurologic conditions (epilepsy, brain tumor, concussion, and others), mood and anxiety disorders, ADHD/LD, medical conditions, and general cognitive concerns. The clinical practice model is based on neuropsychologist interview and interpretation, supported by psychometrist-administered testing. There is a strong educational component to the position. The successful applicant will play a role in the supervision of postdoctoral neuropsychology fellows in our APPCN-member program. Other teaching opportunities include supervision of practicum students and teaching of medical students, residents, and fellows in many disciplines. The successful applicant will be eligible for appointment to the Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine at a level commensurate with experience. In addition to clinical and educational roles, collaborative research activities may be developed based on applicant interest.

Applicants must have completed a doctoral degree from an APA- or CPA-accredited psychology program, an internship with experience in neuropsychology and a postdoctoral fellowship with specialization in pediatric or lifespan neuropsychology. Eligibility for licensure in Ohio is essential. Eligibility for or certification by the American Board of Professional Psychology in Clinical Neuropsychology is strongly preferred.

As the largest employer in Northeast Ohio, with over 80,000 caregivers worldwide, the Cleveland Clinic is able to offer outstanding benefits and support for professional development. There is a constant focus on innovation and leadership in healthcare, and the Neurological Institute works closely with the Innovations group at Cleveland Clinic to facilitate the development of new tools and techniques.

Interested parties, please include a letter of interest and an up-to-date CV with your application.
