Network Performance Monitoring information

What are some common challenges faced in a Network Performance Monitoring role, and how can they be addressed?

Professionals in Network Performance Monitoring often encounter challenges such as identifying the root cause of network slowdowns, managing large volumes of data from various network devices, and ensuring minimal downtime. Staying updated with evolving network technologies and integrating new monitoring tools can also be demanding. These challenges are typically addressed by leveraging automation, collaborating closely with IT and security teams, and continuously updating technical skills to adapt to new monitoring solutions.

What is network performance monitoring?

Network performance monitoring is the process of continuously measuring and analyzing the health, speed, and reliability of a computer network. It involves tracking various metrics such as bandwidth usage, latency, packet loss, and uptime to detect issues and optimize network performance. Effective network performance monitoring helps organizations quickly identify and resolve problems, ensuring smooth connectivity and minimizing downtime.

What is the difference between Network Performance Monitoring vs Network Security Analyst?

AspectNetwork Performance MonitoringNetwork Security Analyst
Primary FocusMonitoring network performance, uptime, and troubleshooting issuesIdentifying and mitigating security threats, analyzing security incidents
Required SkillsNetwork protocols, performance tools, troubleshootingSecurity protocols, threat detection, incident response
CertificationsCCNA, CompTIA Network+CompTIA Security+, CISSP
Work EnvironmentNetwork operations centers, IT departmentsSecurity operations centers, cybersecurity teams

While both roles involve network infrastructure, Network Performance Monitoring focuses on ensuring optimal network operation and troubleshooting performance issues. In contrast, Network Security Analysts concentrate on protecting networks from security threats and breaches. Both roles require technical skills and certifications but serve different aspects of network management.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in Network Performance Monitoring, and why are they important?

To excel in Network Performance Monitoring, a solid grasp of networking fundamentals, troubleshooting, and data analysis—often backed by a degree in IT or related certifications like CompTIA Network+ or Cisco CCNA—is essential. Familiarity with monitoring tools such as SolarWinds, Nagios, or Wireshark, as well as understanding SNMP and network protocols, is typically required. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication help professionals quickly identify and resolve network issues. These skills ensure network reliability, optimize performance, and minimize downtime, which are crucial for organizational productivity.

Job description

Lighthouse Technology Services is partnering with our client to fill their Network Performance Monitoring Engineer position with preferred expertise on SevOne! This is a 10-18 months contract to hire. Ability to work remotely in the U.S. during contract period, but relocation to Buffalo upon conversion is required. This role will be a W2 employee of Lighthouse Technology Services. No C2C or subcontracting arrangements will be considered.
What You'll Be Doing:
  • Provide expertise for the implementation of SevOne.
  • Lead the design, implementation, and lifecycle management of network performance monitoring platforms, including SevOne, flow analytics, and telemetry collectors while ensuring platform health, scalability, and performance SLAs
  • Design and manage comprehensive network telemetry pipelines across SNMP, NetFlow/sFlow/IPFIX, and streaming telemetry while establishing KPI standards for latency, packet loss, throughput, and error metrics
  • Own the enterprise alerting strategy by engineering thresholds, baselines, and anomaly detection capabilities while continuously improving signal-to-noise ratio through noise reduction and deduplication
  • Perform deep analysis of network performance issues including latency, packet loss, congestion, and routing anomalies to drive root cause analysis for high-severity incidents and identify optimization opportunities
  • Build and maintain operational and executive dashboards that enable real-time troubleshooting and SLA reporting while integrating with enterprise observability platforms to support cross-domain correlation
  • Lead network-related incident triage and resolution as the subject matter expert for network signals during major incidents, defining and improving incident response playbooks
  • Ensure complete monitoring coverage across all network infrastructure including routers, switches, firewalls, load balancers, WAN edges, and cloud networking while eliminating blind spots
  • Define and enforce monitoring standards, governance frameworks, and compliance requirements including naming conventions, tagging, and metadata to meet enterprise architecture expectations
  • Collaborate with Network Engineering, SRE/Observability, and application teams to validate signals, enable correlation, and provide onboarding support for NPM capabilities
  • Drive automation initiatives for device onboarding, alert tuning, and reporting to support self-healing use cases and continuously improve MTTR, MTTD, and operational efficiency

What You'll Need to Have:
  • Proven experience in network performance monitoring with deep expertise in platforms such as SevOne, flow analytics tools, and telemetry collection systems
  • Strong technical proficiency in network telemetry protocols and data collection methods including SNMP, NetFlow/sFlow/IPFIX, and streaming telemetry technologies
  • Demonstrated ability to design and implement alerting strategies with experience in threshold tuning, baseline establishment, and anomaly detection methodologies
  • Solid understanding of network performance metrics and troubleshooting including latency analysis, packet loss investigation, congestion management, and routing optimization
  • Experience with dashboarding and observability integration tools, with ability to build both operational and executive-level visualizations
  • Strong technical analysis skills with proven ability to lead root cause analysis for complex network incidents and drive performance improvements
  • Excellent collaboration and communication skills to work effectively across Network Engineering, SRE, and application teams while providing technical guidance and enablement
  • Experience with automation frameworks and scripting to drive efficiency in device onboarding, monitoring workflows, and reporting processes
