They identify bottlenecks, troubleshoot issues, and implement solutions to ensure high network availability and reliability. Their work often includes configuring network devices, analyzing traffic patterns, and collaborating with other IT professionals to improve network efficiency. They may also use specialized tools to test network speed, latency, and bandwidth, ensuring the network meets organizational requirements.

What is the difference between Network Performance Engineer vs Network Engineer?

AspectNetwork Performance EngineerNetwork Engineer
CertificationsCCNA, CCNP, Cisco Performance certificationsCCNA, CCNP, CCIE
Work EnvironmentFocus on monitoring, analyzing, and optimizing network performanceDesigning, implementing, and maintaining network infrastructure
ResponsibilitiesPerformance analysis, troubleshooting, capacity planningNetwork setup, configuration, and security

The main difference is that Network Performance Engineers specialize in ensuring optimal network performance through analysis and troubleshooting, while Network Engineers focus on designing and maintaining network infrastructure. Both roles require similar certifications and often work in the same industry environments, but their core responsibilities differ.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Network Performance Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Network Performance Engineer, you need strong analytical skills in network design, troubleshooting, and performance optimization, often supported by a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with network monitoring tools (such as Wireshark and SolarWinds), protocols, and certifications like CCNP or CCIE are typically required. Excellent problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication set top performers apart in this role. These skills ensure optimal network reliability, security, and efficiency, which are critical for business continuity and user satisfaction.

What are some common challenges faced by Network Performance Engineers when optimizing large-scale enterprise networks?

Network Performance Engineers often encounter challenges such as identifying bottlenecks in complex, multi-vendor environments, ensuring consistent performance during peak usage, and managing unexpected outages or degradations. Troubleshooting can require in-depth analysis of vast amounts of data from various monitoring tools and close collaboration with infrastructure, security, and application teams. Staying updated on evolving technologies and best practices is essential to proactively address issues and maintain high network reliability.

Job description

AWS Infrastructure Services owns the design, planning, delivery, and operation of all AWS global infrastructure. In other words, we're the people who keep the cloud running. We support all AWS data centers and all of the servers, storage, networking, power, and cooling equipment that ensure our customers have continual access to the innovation they rely on.

We work on the most challenging problems, with thousands of variables impacting the supply chain - and we're looking for talented people who want to help.
You'll join a diverse team of software, hardware, and network engineers, supply chain specialists, security experts, operations managers, and other vital roles. You'll collaborate with people across AWS to help us deliver the highest standards for safety and security while providing seemingly infinite capacity at the lowest possible cost for our customers.

And you'll experience an inclusive culture that welcomes bold ideas and empowers you to own them to completion.
Want to drive the development and innovation in a service that impacts thousands of AWS customers. We are currently looking for a software development engineer to help us deliver the future of application and network monitoring at AWS. This role is for building the core functionality of services under the AWS Network Performance Monitoring (NPM) suite and is a good fit for you if you are passionate about autonomous software systems that transform the way applications and networks are built and operated

We are currently looking for a software development engineer to help us deliver the future of software-driven network observability at the core of our global network. This role may be for you if you are passionate about software systems that transform the way networks are built, controlled and operated. You build high quality, highly available, always-on services.

You are happiest when you are working with empowered, world-class leaders and engineers to solve fundamental challenges in planet-scale networks. Finally, with your curiosity and strong ownership bias, you have an infectious desire to continually improve how things are done.
Come join us and do what nobody else in the world is doing... literally

Gain world class knowledge and expertise on the inner workings of the Internet and the Amazon network.
Define, design and build the next generation of Amazon's Software Defined Network. Create, enhance, and run scalable autonomous controller services that observe the state of the network, make active decisions to optimize traffic based on programmable business logic.
Build massive real-time systems which inform and drive complex changes across the global network and Internet

Collaborate with and learn from world leaders in networking and distributed systems. Gain practical experience building incredible software using Amazon Web Services
Key job responsibilities
- Leverage, develop, and implement industry-leading algorithms and techniques to automate and optimize network and internet observability.
- Collaborate closely with cross-functional teams (developers, network experts, scientists, leaders) to translate the business requirements into technical specifications.
- Design, test, and deploy scalable software systems that leverage Generative AI techniques to enhance network performance and reliability.
- Participate in code reviews, provide constructive feedback, and contribute to a culture of excellence in software engineering practices.
- Proactively identify and address technical challenges, troubleshoot issues, and drive resolution to ensure smooth operation of software solutions.
- Communicate effectively with stakeholders to convey project status, solicit feedback, and align on strategic objectives.
- Own the operational excellence of the software you put into production.
- Contribute to improving our documentation, processes, and tools so that we improve our performance as a team.
About the team
The Network Performance Monitoring (NPM) team is responsible for the services that monitor the health of Amazon's traffic to and from the the Internet and within Amazon's internal network. NPM is a fully-managed network performance monitoring service that provides near real-time visibility of network performance, enabling customers to rapidly detect and attribute network driven impairments to their AWS workloads

We provide the foundations for network health, observability and triangulation for AWS customer resources. Our biggest value proposition is to look at a variety of input data sources and come up with a network health indicator indicating the source of the impairment, associated visualizations, alarms, and fault isolation.
