Job description

Position Overview
The Field Service Fiber & Coax Technician is responsible for the installation, activation, maintenance, and repair of fiber optic and coaxial telecommunications services in residential and commercial environments. This role requires strong technical knowledge of FTTH and Coaxial networks, hands-on field experience, and a customer-first mindset. Technicians work independently and as part of a team to ensure reliable, high-quality service delivery while meeting safety, quality, and productivity standards.
Primary Responsibilities
Installation & Activation
• Install, test, and activate fiber optic and coax services at customer premises, including ONTs, modems, routers, and related equipment
• Perform inside and outside plant work, including aerial, underground, and inbuilding installations
• Pull, route, label, terminate, and splice fiber optic and coaxial cables in accordance with engineering specifications
• Configure and verify proper signal levels, light loss, and network performance prior to service activation
Troubleshooting & Maintenance
• Diagnose and resolve service issues related to FTTH and Coaxial networks, including signal loss, intermittent connectivity, and hardware failures
• Use diagnostic tools such as SLM’s, OTDRs, optical power meters, and light meters to identify faults and validate repairs
• Perform preventative maintenance and corrective repairs on fiber and coax infrastructure • Escalate complex network issues to engineering or network operations teams as required
Customer Service & Communication
• Deliver professional, courteous, and knowledgeable on-site customer service
• Clearly explain installation processes, service functionality, and basic troubleshooting steps to customers • Address customer concerns and ensure service satisfaction before completing work
• Represent the company positively at all customer locations
Documentation & Compliance
• Accurately complete work orders, service tickets, and as-built documentation using company systems
• Maintain detailed service records, including test results, materials used, and time on task
• Follow all company policies, safety guidelines, and industry standards, including OSHA and local regulations
• Ensure proper care and accountability of company vehicles, tools, and equipment
Safety & Field Operations
• Safely operate vehicles and equipment while working in residential and commercial environments
• Work at heights using ladders, bucket trucks, and poles when required
• Work outdoors in varying weather conditions and confined spaces
• Participate in safety training and adhere to best practices for fiber handling and splicing
Required Qualifications
• Preferred 1+ years of hands-on experience in fiber optic/coaxial or telecommunications field service roles • Solid understanding of FTTH and Coaxial network architecture and troubleshooting techniques
• Proficiency with fiber splicing equipment, OTDRs, and optical testing tools
• Ability to read and interpret network diagrams, work orders, and engineering documentation • Comfortable working independently with minimal supervision
• Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record
• Strong communication, organizational, and time management skills
Preferred Qualifications
• Fiber optic certification (FOA, ETA, or equivalent)
• Experience with aerial and underground fiber construction and maintenance
• Familiarity with GPON and Active Ethernet systems
• Experience with customer premises equipment (ONTs, routers, Wi-Fi systems)
• Prior experience in an ISP, MSO, or telecommunications service provider environment Physical & Work Environment Requirements
• Ability to lift and carry up to 80 lbs
• Ability to climb ladders and work at heights for extended periods
• Ability to bend, kneel, crawl, and work in tight or confined spaces
• Ability to work flexible schedules, including occasional evenings, weekends, holidays, or on-call rotations
