What Does a Network Engineer Do?
Network Engineers support and optimize all processes for maintaining a company’s computer network, selecting and deploying software and hardware and making local area networks (LANs) and wide area networks (WANs) accessible, and making sure that company personnel can securely access the internet to complete work. Network Engineers also analyze network performance, configure network features based on client needs, and develop guidelines for acceptable network use.
What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Network Engineer, and why are they important?
What are some common challenges Network Engineers face when managing large-scale enterprise networks?
What is the difference between Network Engineer vs Network Administrator?
| Aspect | Network Engineer | Network Administrator |
|---|---|---|
| Certifications | CCNA, CCNP, CompTIA Network+ | CCNA, CompTIA Network+ |
| Work Environment | Designing, implementing, and troubleshooting network infrastructure | Managing and maintaining existing network systems |
| Responsibilities | Network design, configuration, and optimization | Monitoring, maintaining, and supporting network operations |
| Industry Usage | IT, telecommunications, large enterprises | Corporate, small to medium businesses, educational institutions |
While both roles involve working with networks, Network Engineers focus on designing and building network systems, whereas Network Administrators manage and support existing networks. Understanding these differences helps organizations assign the right responsibilities and professionals for their network needs.

Position Summary
Department Summary
Computer Engineering TechnologyComputer Engineering Technology graduates are involved in the development of hardware, software, and embedded applications that adapt digital logic and computer systems to solve problems in a wide range of industries, from industrial manufacturing to consumer electronics. In addition, they may be involved in product testing and qualification or in application engineering, customer support, sales, and public relations.
Embedded Systems Engineering TechnologyEmbedded systems are proliferating in our modern society. On a daily basis, the typical person in the United States will interact with dozens of embedded systems. The Embedded Systems Engineering Technology program targets development of software to run these critical "unseen" systems, quickly becoming interwoven into the fabric of our digital society. Engineers with this knowledge are in high demand, and the demand curve is growing exponentially. Students will gain critical knowledge in an area of software engineering which exists directly on the hardware, providing low level operation and hardware abstraction to higher level software constructs.
Software Engineering TechnologyOregon Tech's Software Engineering Technology program's emphasis is on a combination of theory and application, not just theory. The applied, hands-on curriculum prepares students for entry into the computer professions. Students will develop solid Software Engineering skills throughout all phases of the curriculum. From Software Testing and Design Patterns classes in the sophomore year to Project Management and Software Quality Assurance concepts in the junior and senior years, these concepts are a crucial part of a Software Engineer's skillset.
