What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a network design engineer?

To thrive as a Network Design Engineer, you need a solid understanding of networking protocols, routing and switching, and network architecture, often backed by a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with tools such as Cisco IOS, Juniper Junos, network simulation software, and certifications like CCNP or CCIE are typically required. Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving skills, and effective communication help network engineers collaborate with teams and clearly explain design choices. These skills ensure robust, scalable, and secure network infrastructures that support organizational needs.

What does a network design engineer do?

A network design engineer plans, develops, and implements network infrastructure to ensure reliable data communication within organizations. They analyze requirements, design network layouts, select appropriate hardware and protocols, and often use tools like Cisco or Juniper for configuration. Strong knowledge of networking principles, security, and certifications such as CCNA or CCNP are typically required.

What are the common challenges faced by network design engineers during large-scale infrastructure projects?

Network Design Engineers often encounter challenges such as integrating new technologies with legacy systems, ensuring network scalability, and addressing evolving security requirements. Coordinating with multiple stakeholders—including IT, security teams, and vendors—can add complexity to project timelines. Effective communication and thorough documentation are key to overcoming these hurdles and ensuring that the final design meets both technical and business objectives.

What is the difference between Network Design Engineer vs Network Engineer?

AspectNetwork Design EngineerNetwork Engineer
CertificationsCCNA, CCNP, Cisco Certified Design Expert (CCDE)CCNA, CCNP, CompTIA Network+
Work EnvironmentDesigning network architectures, planning infrastructure, collaborating with architectsImplementing, configuring, maintaining existing networks
Employer & Industry UsageTelecommunications, large enterprises, consulting firmsIT departments, service providers, corporate networks

While both roles involve networking, the Network Design Engineer focuses on planning and designing network systems, whereas the Network Engineer handles the implementation and maintenance of those networks. Understanding these differences helps in choosing the right career path or job search focus.

Job description

THE COMPANY
Silvus Technologies, a leading provider of advanced MANET and MIMO communications systems, is reshaping mesh network technology for mission-critical applications - on the ground, in the air and at sea. Its battle-proven StreamCaster family of MANET radios and proprietary MN-MIMO waveform provides the vital communications link for defense, law enforcement and public safety agencies around the world, and in the toughest operational environments.
With deep roots in DARPA research, Silvus Technologies develops world-class advanced communications technologies that are reshaping the tactical communications landscape. From pure line-of-sight to extreme non-line-of-sight, Silvus radios form a self-healing, self-forming mesh network, enabling secure and reliable connectivity, including video and high-bandwidth data.
Silvus Technologies is a wholly owned subsidiary of Motorola Solutions, Inc.
Would you like to join an incredibly talented group of people, doing very challenging work, with the prime directive of "Keeping Our Heroes Connected"?
THE OPPORTUNITY
Silvus is seeking a Senior FPGA / RTL Design Engineer reporting to the Director of FPGA Engineering on the FPGA Engineering team. The successful individual in this role will participate in all aspects of the research and development process from concept to field deployment. FPGA Design Engineers are responsible for the efficient implementation of novel signal processing algorithms for Silvus' MIMO wireless networking products. In addition, they participate in the support and development of FPGA-based designs for our advanced wireless systems R&D. These are exciting projects targeted to address challenging real-world communication needs.
The Senior FPGA / RTL Design Engineer position will be based at Silvus headquarters in the heart of vibrant West Los Angeles, CA and is on a hybrid schedule; a minimum of 3 days onsite per week is expected. On-site days are Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays.
The following is a list of at least some of the current essential job functions of the position. Management may assign or reassign duties and responsibilities at any time at its discretion.
ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Digital design architecting for wireless communication projects.
  • Fixed point design of signal processing blocks while working with systems engineers.
  • RTL coding, simulation, and test bench development.
