Network Automation Engineer Intern information

What does a network automation engineer intern do?

A Network Automation Engineer Intern assists with automating network operations and processes using programming and scripting languages. Their responsibilities often include writing scripts to configure network devices, testing automation solutions, and working alongside senior engineers to optimize network performance. Interns also learn about network protocols, monitoring tools, and best practices in network security. The role offers hands-on experience in both networking and software development, preparing interns for advanced roles in network engineering.

What types of projects and technologies can a network automation engineer intern expect to work with during their internship?

As a Network Automation Engineer Intern, you will typically assist with automating network configurations, troubleshooting, and monitoring tasks using tools like Python, Ansible, and network simulation platforms. Interns often collaborate with senior engineers to develop or improve scripts that streamline network operations and enhance reliability. You may also participate in team meetings to discuss automation strategies and gain exposure to real-world networking environments, which is invaluable for building hands-on experience and understanding industry best practices.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a network automation engineer intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Network Automation Engineer Intern, you need a solid understanding of networking fundamentals, scripting languages (such as Python), and progress toward a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with automation tools like Ansible, REST APIs, and version control systems such as Git is typically expected. Strong analytical thinking, a collaborative mindset, and effective communication skills help interns excel in dynamic team environments. These skills and qualities are crucial for efficiently automating network tasks, troubleshooting issues, and contributing to modern, scalable network infrastructures.

What is the difference between Network Automation Engineer Intern vs Network Engineer Intern?

AspectNetwork Automation Engineer InternNetwork Engineer Intern
Required CredentialsBasic networking certifications (e.g., Cisco CCNA), familiarity with automation toolsBasic networking knowledge, certifications like CCNA or CompTIA Network+
Work EnvironmentFocus on automation scripting, network management, and troubleshootingNetwork setup, configuration, and maintenance tasks
Industry UsageUsed in companies emphasizing network automation and SDNCommon in traditional network infrastructure roles
Search & Comparison IntentInterested in automation-focused networking rolesLooking for general network internship opportunities

The main difference between a Network Automation Engineer Intern and a Network Engineer Intern lies in their focus. The automation intern emphasizes scripting, automation tools, and network management, while the network intern concentrates on configuring and maintaining network hardware. Both roles require foundational networking knowledge, but the automation role leans more towards programming and automation technologies.

Network Automation EngineerAbout Netris

Netris is the leading network automation platform for AI clouds. AI is the largest infrastructure buildout in history, and networking is its bottleneck. Netris is the automation and multi-tenancy layer for AI cloud networking, enabling operators to launch GPU clouds in weeks, provision tenants instantly, and maximize GPU utilization. The company experienced 800% ARR growth in the last 12 months, with 35+ live GPU cluster deployments globally and growing, and is backed by Andreessen Horowitz. SDN reinvented data center networking, and Netris is doing it for the AI cloud with NAAM: Network Automation, Abstraction, and Multi-tenancy.

The role

This is a hands-on engineering role combining network engineering, validation, and network automation . The ideal candidate has strong data center networking knowledge and the ability to design and implement automated test frameworks that validate complex network features, configurations, protocols, and end-to-end traffic behavior.

The engineer will work closely with Network Validation, Engineering, Architecture, and Product teams to improve validation coverage, accelerate release qualification, and reduce manual testing.

What youโ€™ll do
  • Designing and developing automated network validation tests.
  • Building reusable automation libraries and test frameworks.
  • Converting existing manual network validation scenarios into reliable automated tests.
  • Automating configuration, verification, and cleanup of test environments.
  • Validating control-plane and data-plane behavior.
  • Integrating automated validation into CI/CD pipelines.
  • Investigating test failures and performing network-level troubleshooting.
  • Improving test coverage, reliability, execution time, and reporting.
  • Working with Network Validation Engineers to identify high-value automation opportunities.
  • Collaborating with Engineering and Architecture teams to ensure new networking features are testable from the design phase.
  • Contributing to release qualification and regression testing.
