Typical duties include evaluating new technologies, installing new software and hardware, analyzing the performance of networks, and providing troubleshooting assistance. An essential part of the job is monitoring network security, spotting security flaws before they are manipulated, and staying current with the latest industry technologies. The job requires experience with large computer networks as well as data communication systems.

What does a network architect do?

A network architect designs, plans, and implements computer networks for organizations, ensuring they meet performance, security, and scalability requirements. They analyze business needs, select appropriate hardware and software, and create network diagrams, often using tools like Cisco or Juniper. Certification such as CCNP or CISSP can enhance their expertise, and they typically work in office environments with project deadlines.

Are network architects paid hourly or salary?

Network architects are typically paid a salary, especially when working full-time in corporate or enterprise environments. Compensation can also include benefits and bonuses, and some roles may offer hourly pay for consulting or contract work, but salaried positions are more common in this field.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Network Architect, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Network Architect, you need a deep understanding of network design, protocols, and security principles, typically supported by a degree in computer science or information technology. Familiarity with network hardware, cloud platforms, and certifications such as Cisco CCNA/CCNP or CompTIA Network+ is highly valued. Excellent problem-solving, analytical thinking, and strong communication skills set top candidates apart in this role. These skills are critical to designing reliable, scalable, and secure network infrastructures that support organizational goals and adapt to evolving technologies.

Are network architects in demand?

Both roles are essential in maintaining robust network infrastructure within organizations.

How much does a network architect get paid?

A network architect's average salary in the United States ranges from $80,000 to $150,000 annually, depending on experience, certifications, and location. Senior roles or those with specialized skills in network design and security can earn higher salaries, often exceeding $160,000 per year.

How does a Network Architect typically collaborate with other IT teams during large-scale infrastructure projects?

Network Architects play a key role in cross-functional collaboration, especially during large-scale infrastructure projects. They work closely with system administrators, cybersecurity teams, and software developers to ensure network design aligns with operational needs and security protocols. Regular meetings and design reviews are common, allowing Network Architects to gather requirements, address technical constraints, and integrate feedback across departments. This collaborative approach helps ensure robust, scalable, and secure network solutions that support the organization's goals.

What are Network Architects?

Network Architects are IT professionals who design, build, and maintain computer networks, including local area networks (LANs), wide area networks (WANs), and intranets. They are responsible for creating network blueprints that meet an organization’s technical and business needs, ensuring the network is robust, secure, and scalable. Their work often involves selecting suitable hardware and software, planning for future growth, and troubleshooting complex network problems. Network Architects also collaborate with other IT professionals to integrate new technologies and maintain network efficiency.

Job description

Network Architect Opportunity

A leading Children's Hospital currently undergoing a significant merger is seeking a seasoned Network Architect to join our Information Technology team on a permanent, full-time basis. This is a high-impact role at a pivotal moment in our organization's growth — you will be instrumental in unifying and modernizing our network infrastructure across multiple locations to support the seamless delivery of pediatric care.

You will serve as the primary architect responsible for designing, planning, and executing a comprehensive network transformation — including migrating from our current ACI environment to an EVPN-based architecture and leading the transition from Layer 2 to Layer 3 access across all sites.

Key Responsibilities

Network Architecture & Design

  • Architect and design the migration from Cisco ACI to EVPN technology with a focus on the access layer across all hospital locations.
  • Lead the transition from Layer 2 access to Layer 3 access networking to enable appropriate automation and standardization.
  • Establish consistency across core and data layers — defining and standardizing VLAN structures and building frameworks where none currently exist.
  • Design and implement core-level routing strategies across all locations.
  • Plan and develop the overall infrastructure architecture to support current operations and future growth resulting from the hospital merger.

IP Address Management & Planning

  • Scope and design new IP address plans and IP scopes, migrating to updated IP ranges to support the merged organization.
  • Manage and maintain DDI (DNS, DHCP, IPAM) systems to ensure accurate and reliable IP address allocation.

Security & Access Control

  • Architect and manage network access control using Cisco ISE.
  • Collaborate with security teams on Palo Alto security platform integration and policy enforcement across the network.

Wireless Infrastructure

  • Oversee and contribute to wireless controller design and management to ensure reliable connectivity across all hospital campuses.

Collaboration & Stakeholder Engagement

  • Partner with clinical, operational, and IT stakeholders to understand business requirements and translate them into network architecture solutions.
  • Document architecture decisions, standards, and configurations clearly for technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Mentor and provide technical guidance to junior network engineers as needed.
Required Qualifications
  • Active CCIE (Cisco Certified Internetwork Expert) certification — any track considered; routing & switching or data center preferred.
  • Proven hands-on experience with both on-premises and hardware-based network environments.
  • Deep expertise in Cisco ACI and practical knowledge of EVPN technology and migration.
  • Strong background in core-level routing protocols (BGP, OSPF, EIGRP) and Layer 2/Layer 3 architecture.
  • Demonstrated experience with Cisco ISE for network access control and policy management.
  • Proficiency with DDI systems (DNS, DHCP, IPAM) and IP address planning.
  • Experience with wireless controller platforms and enterprise wireless design.
  • Experience with Palo Alto Networks security platforms and integration into network architectures.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to design solutions in complex, multi-site environments.
  • Excellent communication and documentation skills.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in healthcare IT environments or other mission-critical regulated industries.
  • Familiarity with network automation tools and frameworks (Ansible, Python, Terraform, etc.).
  • Experience supporting merger or acquisition-related network integration projects.
  • Working knowledge of SD-WAN platforms and cloud networking concepts.
