What is a Neta 1 technician?

Neta 1 Technicians are entry-level electrical testing professionals certified by the InterNational Electrical Testing Association (NETA). They perform basic electrical testing, maintenance, and troubleshooting under supervision, ensuring that electrical equipment and systems operate safely and efficiently. Their duties often include inspecting, testing, and documenting the performance of devices like circuit breakers, transformers, and protective relays. Neta 1 certification is the first step in a progressive career path for electrical test technicians.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Neta 1 technician?

To excel as a NETA 1 Technician, you need a foundational understanding of electrical theory, safety procedures, and basic electrical testing, typically supported by a high school diploma or equivalent and completion of NETA Level 1 certification. Familiarity with electrical testing equipment, such as multimeters, insulation resistance testers, and circuit analyzers, is crucial, along with knowledge of safety standards like NFPA 70E. Strong attention to detail, willingness to learn, and effective communication skills help technicians follow protocols and collaborate with senior team members. These competencies ensure accurate testing, compliance with safety regulations, and reliable support for complex electrical systems.

What are some typical challenges faced by a Neta 1 technician during electrical equipment testing, and how can they be managed?

As a Neta 1 Technician, one of the most common challenges involves troubleshooting unexpected results during acceptance or maintenance testing of electrical systems. Technicians may encounter complex issues with switchgear, transformers, or protection relays that require quick thinking and adherence to safety protocols. Effective communication with senior technicians and engineers is crucial for resolving these challenges, as is keeping up-to-date with testing procedures and equipment manuals. Additionally, balancing fieldwork in various environments can require adaptability and strong organizational skills.

Job description

ABOUT SHAMROCK BUSINESS CONSULTING

Shamrock Business Consulting is a direct-hire recruiting firm focused exclusively on the power, construction, and mission-critical industries. We partner with electrical testing, engineering, and utility-services companies across the country to connect them with technicians who keep the grid running safely. When you apply through Shamrock, you work directly with a recruiter who understands the trade and will walk you through the process from first call to first day — no resume black hole, no runaround.

ABOUT THE ROLE

Twelve months in, success looks like running standard acceptance and maintenance test procedures on low- and medium-voltage equipment with light oversight, turning in clean, accurate field data, and becoming a trusted member of the field crew as you work toward Level III certification.

WHAT YOU'LL DO

  • Perform routine acceptance and maintenance testing on switchgear, transformers, breakers, relays, and other protective devices under the direction of a senior technician

  • Set up, calibrate, and operate test equipment such as megohmmeters, hipot sets, and relay test sets

  • Record accurate field data and assist with report preparation

  • Follow NFPA 70E, OSHA, and NETA safety standards on every job site, including lockout/tagout and arc-flash procedures

  • Travel to client sites throughout the Treasure Valley as projects require

  • Support senior technicians on more complex commissioning and troubleshooting work to build toward Level III certification

WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR

Required:

  • NETA Level II certification, or eligibility to sit for the exam (2 years of related field experience, or 1 year with completion of a 2-year technical electrical program)

  • Working knowledge of electrical safety practices (NFPA 70E, OSHA 10/30)

  • Valid driver's license and willingness to travel to job sites

  • Ability to read and interpret one-line diagrams and schematics

Preferred:

  • Prior experience with switchgear, transformer, or relay testing

  • Associate degree or technical school training in electrical/electronics technology

  • Experience with test equipment such as Doble, Megger, or Multi-Amp instruments

HOW TO APPLY

Apply directly on LinkedIn, or send your resume and NETA certification to Lance Mooney at lmooney@shamrock-consulting.net or 208-449-3698. All inquiries are confidential.
