What is a Neta 1 technician?

Neta 1 Technicians are entry-level electrical testing professionals certified by the InterNational Electrical Testing Association (NETA). They perform basic electrical testing, maintenance, and troubleshooting under supervision, ensuring that electrical equipment and systems operate safely and efficiently. Their duties often include inspecting, testing, and documenting the performance of devices like circuit breakers, transformers, and protective relays. Neta 1 certification is the first step in a progressive career path for electrical test technicians.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Neta 1 technician?

To excel as a NETA 1 Technician, you need a foundational understanding of electrical theory, safety procedures, and basic electrical testing, typically supported by a high school diploma or equivalent and completion of NETA Level 1 certification. Familiarity with electrical testing equipment, such as multimeters, insulation resistance testers, and circuit analyzers, is crucial, along with knowledge of safety standards like NFPA 70E. Strong attention to detail, willingness to learn, and effective communication skills help technicians follow protocols and collaborate with senior team members. These competencies ensure accurate testing, compliance with safety regulations, and reliable support for complex electrical systems.

What are some typical challenges faced by a Neta 1 technician during electrical equipment testing, and how can they be managed?

As a Neta 1 Technician, one of the most common challenges involves troubleshooting unexpected results during acceptance or maintenance testing of electrical systems. Technicians may encounter complex issues with switchgear, transformers, or protection relays that require quick thinking and adherence to safety protocols. Effective communication with senior technicians and engineers is crucial for resolving these challenges, as is keeping up-to-date with testing procedures and equipment manuals. Additionally, balancing fieldwork in various environments can require adaptability and strong organizational skills.

About this Role
Power Engineering Services, a Quanta Services Company, is looking for Assistant Testing Technicians (NETA 2) to join our growing teams across our Houston, Dallas, Austin, and San Antonio, TX markets.
As an Assistant Testing Technician at Power Engineering Services, you will perform acceptance and maintenance testing on electrical power systems and equipment in the field. Working under the direction of an Electrical Testing Technician (NETA 3) or Sr. Electrical Testing Technician (NETA 4), you will execute test procedures, document results, and build the hands-on expertise that leads to independent project ownership. This is a hands-on, customer-facing role for technicians who want a clear path from Level 2 toward Level 3 certification and eventual technician-in-charge responsibility.
What You'll Do
  • Perform acceptance and maintenance testing on power systems and equipment, including switchgear, transformers, protective relays, circuit breakers, cabling, and grounding systems.
  • Execute assigned test procedures and scopes of work under the direction of an Electrical Testing Technician (NETA 3) or Senior Certified Technician.
  • Set up, calibrate, and operate electrical test equipment; verify results and identify readings that fall outside expected values.
  • Record and document test data accurately and completely, and draft field test reports for review by a certified technician or engineer.
  • Follow and enforce NETA standards, NFPA 70E, and company safety protocols on every job site - including lockout/tagout, arc flash and shock hazard boundaries, and PPE requirements.
  • Assist with troubleshooting and root-cause investigation, escalating complex findings to the Electrical Testing Technician or engineering team.
  • Support and help train Level 1 technicians and apprentices in test procedures and safe work practices.
  • Maintain assigned test equipment, tooling, and vehicle inventory in calibrated, job-ready condition.
  • Represent Power Engineering Services professionally on customer sites and communicate job status clearly to the technician in charge.

What You'll Bring
  • NETA Level 2 Certification, or the ability to sit for the exam within 6 months of hire. NETA Level 3 is a plus and is the expected progression for this role.
  • Minimum of 2+ years of hands-on experience in electrical testing, commissioning, or field service on medium- and/or high-voltage equipment.
  • Associate degree, technical/trade school certificate, or military electrical training (preferred); Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field is a plus.
  • Working knowledge of electrical codes and standards, including NEC, NFPA 70E, and applicable IEEE and ANSI standards; familiarity with NESC is a plus.
  • Ability to read and interpret one-line diagrams, schematics, wiring diagrams, and equipment submittals.
  • Proficiency with common field test equipment (insulation resistance, contact resistance, power factor, primary and secondary injection, relay test sets).
  • Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record; ability to pass a background check, drug screen, and customer site-access requirements.
  • Ability to lift and carry test equipment up to 50 lbs and to work outdoors in varying job-site conditions.
  • Willingness to travel to job sites and to work off-hours, nights, weekends, and scheduled outages as project needs require. Travel may include assignments outside your home area, including out-of-state travel and overnight stays.
  • Strong work ethic and enthusiasm for tackling new challenges with a commitment to finding optimal solutions.

What You'll Get
As a Quanta Services employee, you'll be offered a wide range of benefits to fit your needs.
  • 401(k) with immediate matching and vesting
  • Fully comprehensive benefits packages; Medical, Dental, Vision
    • Your choice of PPO, HSA, FSA
