How much do net energy metering jobs pay per hour?

As of Jun 8, 2026, the average hourly pay for net energy metering in the United States is $53.73, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $46.39 and $61.30 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What is Net Energy Metering (NEM)?

Net Energy Metering (NEM) is a billing arrangement that allows homeowners or businesses with solar panels or other renewable energy systems to receive credit for the electricity they add to the grid. When your system produces more energy than you use, the excess is sent to the utility grid and you receive credits that offset your electricity costs when your system isn't generating enough power. This helps lower your electricity bills and encourages the adoption of renewable energy. NEM policies and compensation rates can vary by state and utility, so it's important to check local regulations.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Net Energy Metering Specialist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Net Energy Metering Specialist, you need a solid understanding of electrical engineering, renewable energy systems, and utility regulations, often supported by a relevant degree or technical certification. Familiarity with metering software, utility billing platforms, and compliance tools is essential for managing and monitoring energy flows and customer accounts. Strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and effective communication are vital for resolving customer inquiries and ensuring regulatory compliance. These capabilities are crucial for accurately administering net energy metering programs, supporting customer satisfaction, and ensuring adherence to industry standards.

What are some common challenges Net Energy Metering (NEM) specialists face when coordinating with utility companies and customers?

NEM specialists often encounter challenges related to interpreting and applying evolving utility regulations, ensuring accurate metering and billing, and effectively communicating technical requirements to both customers and utility representatives. Navigating the approval and interconnection process can be complex due to varying regional policies and the need for thorough documentation. Successful professionals in this role develop strong problem-solving skills and maintain up-to-date knowledge of industry standards to facilitate smooth collaboration and project completion.

What is the difference between Net Energy Metering vs Solar Installer?
