Refining Inspector
Job Summary
Marathon Petroleum Company's Kenai Refinery is currently looking for a full-time Refinery Inspector for the Inspection Group in the Maintenance Department. This position is the primary contact for support associated with fixed equipment integrity related issues on process equipment and piping. The Area Inspector is responsible for ensuring fixed equipment is in compliance with state regulations, refining standards, and specifications. This role works closely with operations and maintenance to identify issues and mitigate mechanical integrity risks.
The available schedule for the position is Monday - Thursday 7 AM - 5:30 PM, after hours calls are required several times a year and support of TAR every 3 years.
Key Responsibilities
  • Performs and/or coordinates fixed equipment inspections, including process equipment and piping, required by site mechanical integrity and inspection programs.
  • Develops and executes inspection plans/life cycle management for refining equipment based on service, design, condition, jurisdictional requirements, temporary repairs and equipment replacements, Turnaround (TAR) dates, and inspection history. Prioritizes and plans work within the respective assigned area team.
  • Provides scope and supporting documentation (justification, timing, preparations, etc.), for fixed equipment mechanical integrity related work to Maintenance (Routine, Major Maintenance, Turnarounds, etc.).
  • Documents inspection records, findings, and recommendations in Marathon's Inspection Data Management System (IDMS). Completes all required documentation and interprets and applies industry and Recognized and Generally Accepted Good Engineering Practice (RAGAGEP) codes and specifications. Develops, revises, and maintains comprehensive inspection procedures, applicable guidelines, and work instructions.
  • Understands critical process variables that affect equipment reliability, identifies gaps, and leads gap closure effort. Generates and provides repair/upgrade recommendations based on findings, options, and risk assessments in conjunction with area team and other departments on-site.
  • Trains in the required areas of responsibility as identified by the Inspection Supervisor.
  • Program Manager for special emphasis projects supporting site mechanical integrity program.
  • Reviews and applies Management of Change (MOC) requirements and ensures all Process Safety Management (PSM) elements are implemented.

Education, Experience and Skills
Minimum Qualifications
  • Must have a high school diploma or GED. (Education must be obtained/completed prior to start date)
  • Must have both API 510 and API 570 certifications.
  • Must have a minimum of three (3) years inspection experience in Fixed Equipment, Reliability &/or Maintenance in a refinery, petro-chemical or other heavy related industry.
  • Must be familiar with Risk Based Inspection (RBI) strategy based on API-580/581.
  • Must be proficient in Microsoft: Word, Excel and Outlook.
  • Must be able to wear appropriate PPE in the refinery (respirator), be able to physically perform all tasks in the field and take hair drug test and physical.
  • Must have a valid driver's license. (MPC determines valid status.)
  • Must have steady employment history.
  • Must be able to obtain a TWIC Card.
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the US without the need for future VISA sponsorship.
  • Travel Requirement is 5 % or less.
  • Must be able to work Monday- Thursday - 7 AM - 5:30 PM, after hours calls are required several times a year and support of TAR every 3 years.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor's or Associate degree in Mechanical Technology, Corrosion Technology, Welding Technology, or Non-Destructive Technology (NDT) is preferred.
  • API 653, 571, 580, and/or 581 certifications are preferred.
  • CWI/AWS/SW certifications are preferred.
  • ANST Level II (UTT, RTFI, MT, PT) certifications are preferred.
  • More than three (3) or more years of experience as a refinery inspector working with industry-related codes is preferred.
  • Extensive experience and understanding of RBI inspection strategies based on API-580/581 is preferred.
  • Experience with IDMS software such as APM and RBMI is preferred.
