SUMMARY:
The instructor is entrusted with imparting the knowledge and skills each student needs to be successful by providing quality delivery of assigned courses while ensuring that all students achieve competency in the course objectives.
Instructors evaluate and resolve student questions, issues, and problems, and ensure appropriate action is taken to the satisfaction of the student, Dorsey College, and/or regulatory agencies in compliance with policy, procedures, and legal requirements. Instructors are to be motivating, fair and impartial, creative, dedicated, and professional.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
  • Plan, prepare, and deliver quality classroom instruction in lecture, clinical, and/or laboratory format based on the approved course outline by selecting and utilizing a variety of approved course materials and teaching methods that address all learning modalities to ensure that the needs of individual students in the program are met.
  • Lecture, conduct, and supervise clinical experiences of RN students and provide in-services as directed.
  • Instruct students in the principles and application of physical, biological, and psychological subjects related to the role of the RN as necessary.
  • Plan and coordinate daily learning experiences that individualize both student and patient needs.
  • Provide learning opportunities that enhance student development in the application of the nursing process, interpersonal skills acquisition, and technical procedures.
  • Provide guidance and education to RN students on problem solving and effective communication between co-workers, patients, and patient family members across a variety of cultural, ethnic, and socioeconomic levels.
  • Participate in campus-wide orientation of RN students.
  • Supervise and monitor students on an ongoing basis as they perform technical and patient care skills.
  • Assess patient status on an ongoing basis to ensure appropriate learning experiences.
  • Collaborate with the Director of Nursing to monitor student progress and maintain records of student clinical experiences.

  • Maintain accurate records of students' time and attendance, evaluations, experiences, performance, and progress. Report any/all concerns to the Director of Nursing.
  • Consults with the Director of Nursing regarding actions to be taken with students who are in jeopardy and/or whose performance does not meet clinical standards.
  • Collaborates with medical and nursing personnel to evaluate and improve teaching techniques throughout the externship module. Makes recommendations for improvement of the clinical experience if needed.
  • Participates in the development of procedures, clinical protocols, and forms as requested by the Director of Nursing.
  • Facilitate and assist in student lab and simulation activities.
  • Participate in faculty, staff, committee, and in-service meetings. Attendance at commencement is strongly encouraged.
  • **Other related tasks as assigned and deemed necessary.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Current Michigan Registered Nursing license required.
  • Master of Science in Nursing Degree required (MSN).
  • Minimum of three (3) years of clinical experience as a registered nurse.
  • Prior experience teaching students or staff preferred.

WORKING / PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
  • May be required to work late and occasional weekends to support business needs.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to see, talk and hear. The employee is frequently required to stand; walk; sit for extended periods of time; and have sufficient hand, arm and finger dexterity to operate a phone, computer keyboard and other office equipment.
