Position DescriptionDEFINITION:To provide classroom instruction regarding becoming a building inspector including lecture, demonstration, laboratory exercises, handouts, responding to questions, and testing. Students are experienced in one or more building trades and seek to pass this class to become a certified building inspector through the NC Department of Insurance (NCDOI)
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED:- Receives supervision from EWD Senior Director and/or Workforce Training Coordinator
- Exercises no supervision
Duties & Responsibilities (Essential Functions)ESSENTIAL AND OTHER IMPORTANT FUNCTION STATEMENT:Essential and other important responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Provide classroom and laboratory instruction
- Prepare online/virtual lessons through Canvas
- Prepare lesson plans and schedule classroom activities; develop, and prepare supplemental materials to enhance textbook lessons
- Develop and prepare tests to evaluate student performance; grade and record individual scores
- Provide classroom demonstrations on various equipment and machinery; develop laboratory assignments to provide hands on experience as appropriate
- Participate in curriculum development, evaluation, and change; attend faculty meetings as required.
- Work the number of hours scheduled by the Workforce Development Department
- Maintain accurate records of student attendance, and performance; maintain other records and databases according to program needs or accreditation requirements.
- Stay abreast of new developments, and changes in various academic fields; participate in staff development programs, workshops, seminars, and other continuing education programs as appropriate
- Oversee the implementation of policies and procedures related to required teaching area
- As needed, attend trade association meetings and interact with employers.
Other Important Functions:- Assess the relevancy and impact of various lessons; revise and improve lesson format; evaluate
- Select various text books to be used for future classes
- Perform other related duties and responsibilities as assigned
QualificationsQUALIFICATIONS:Knowledge of:- Classroom and laboratory instructional techniques and procedures
- NCDOI requirements to become a building inspector in various trades
- Principles and procedures of academic and instructional program development and administration in the area of assignment
- Current trends, research, and development in the area of assignment
- Principles and procedures of record keeping
- Principles and techniques involved in test development and administration
- Pertinent Federal, State, and local laws, codes, and regulations
Ability to:- Interpret and apply college goals, objectives, policies, procedures, rules and regulations
- Interpret and apply Federal, State and local policies, procedures, laws and regulations
- Communicate clearly, and concisely, both orally and in writing
- Establish and maintain cooperative-working relationships with those contacted in the course of work
- Maintain effective audio-visual discrimination and perception needed for:
- Making observations
- Reading and writing
- Communicating with others
- Operating assigned equipment
- Handling varied tasks simultaneously
- Maintain physical condition appropriate to the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities which may include the following:
- Standing or sitting for extended periods of time

- Preparing and presenting instructional material.
- Bending, stooping, climbing or lifting up to 50 pounds

EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING GUIDELINESAny combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying.
Required Education/Training, Experience, Skills:- Minimum high school diploma
- At least 5 years' experience in a trade (building, plumbing, electrical, and/or mechanical)
- At least 2 years' experience as a building inspector
- Certified Standard Certificate Instructor by the NCDOI
- Experience with technology for presentations, email correspondence. Preferred experience with online learning.
