Job description

Carlow University seeks a dedicated, enthusiastic, and student-centered Men's Volleyball Coach to lead its NCAA Division III men's volleyball program. The Men's Volleyball Coach is responsible for all aspects of program management, including recruiting, student-athlete development, practice and competition planning, compliance, academic support, fundraising, and community engagement.
As a member of Carlow University's coaching staff, the Men's Volleyball Coach is expected to foster a culture of excellence, integrity, sportsmanship, and accountability while supporting the University's mission and commitment to the holistic development of student-athletes. This position requires strong leadership, excellent organizational and communication skills, and a collaborative approach to building a successful and compliant men's volleyball program.
Essential Responsibilities
Student-Athlete Development & Leadership
  • Serve as a positive role model for student-athletes and assistant coaches by demonstrating the highest standards of ethical and professional conduct.
  • Promote sportsmanship, teamwork, personal responsibility, and respect both on and off the court.
  • Treat opposing coaches, student-athletes, officials, and spectators with professionalism and respect.
  • Establish and consistently enforce team expectations and equitable disciplinary standards.
  • Provide individualized instruction and constructive feedback to help student-athletes achieve their fullest athletic and personal potential.
  • Plan and conduct organized, engaging practices emphasizing volleyball skill development, fundamentals, team systems, and competitive strategies appropriate for NCAA Division III men's volleyball competition.
Program Administration
  • Develop and submit practice schedules and competition schedules in accordance with departmental timelines and compliance requirements.
  • Ensure all schedules receive appropriate approvals prior to the start of each season and communicate any changes promptly to Athletics administration and Athletic Training staff.
  • Adhere to NCAA, conference, and institutional practice limitations, including applicable participation and seven-day practice rules.
  • Conduct a minimum of five practices per week during preseason, with six practice days recommended. During the competitive season, conduct a minimum of three practices per week in addition to competitions, not to exceed six days of countable athletically related activities per week. Provide a minimum of seven hours of weekly instruction and competition.
  • Attend all scheduled practices and competitions unless prior approval is granted by the Director of Athletics.
  • Coordinate team transportation for off-campus practices and competitions using University-approved vehicles. Personal vehicles may not be used for transporting student-athletes.
  • Work collaboratively with assistant coaches and Athletics staff to ensure safe and efficient transportation logistics.
Recruiting
  • Meet annual recruiting goals established by the Department of Athletics.
  • Build and maintain a men's volleyball roster that meets departmental minimum roster expectations.
  • Meet regularly with the Athletics Recruiting Coordinator to review recruiting progress and strategy.
  • Utilize all approved recruiting resources and adhere to departmental recruiting procedures.
  • Accurately document recruiting activities and prospect information in the FrontRush recruiting system on a weekly basis.
Compliance & Risk Management
  • Maintain full compliance with all NCAA Division III, conference, USCAA, and University policies and procedures.
  • Complete all required NCAA, institutional, and compliance training by established deadlines.
  • Submit required compliance documentation and roster updates in a timely manner.
  • Obtain and maintain CPR certification within 30 days of employment.
  • Obtain and maintain all required Pennsylvania child protection clearances.
  • Maintain a valid Pennsylvania driver's license and complete University van certification within 30 days of employment.
Communication & Collaboration
  • Monitor Carlow University email as the primary form of University communication by checking messages at least twice daily during the academic year.
  • Check campus mailbox regularly.
  • Maintain a minimum of two posted office hours per week outside the competitive season for student-athletes.
  • Attend required monthly coaches' meetings, departmental trainings, and other University meetings as assigned.
Budget & Equipment Management
  • Utilize University purchasing cards responsibly and in accordance with institutional purchasing procedures.
  • Obtain appropriate approvals for expenditures outside of approved team, recruiting, or travel expenses.
  • Follow departmental purchasing procedures for team apparel, uniforms, equipment, and volleyball program needs.
Community Engagement & Program Development
  • Participate in departmental fundraising initiatives and men's volleyball team fundraising activities.
  • Organize and conduct at least one youth volleyball camp or clinic during each academic year in coordination with the Athletics Camps Director and University policies.
  • Participate in at least one community service activity annually.
  • Participate in the annual Beth Shalom event each spring.
  • Fulfill additional expectations outlined in the coaching appointment letter or established by the Director of Athletics to support a successful and compliant men's volleyball program.
Minimum Qualifications
Education
  • Bachelor's degree required.

Experience
  • Two to three years of collegiate, club, or high school volleyball coaching or related athletic experience.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Collegiate men's volleyball coaching and recruiting experience.
  • Knowledge of NCAA Division III rules and compliance procedures.
  • Demonstrated ability to recruit and retain qualified student-athletes.
  • Strong leadership, organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills.
  • Demonstrated commitment to student-athlete success both academically and athletically.
Required Certifications & Qualifications
Successful candidates must obtain and maintain:
  • Current CPR certification (within 30 days of hire).
  • Valid Pennsylvania driver's license.
  • University-approved campus van certification (within 30 days of hire).
  • All required Pennsylvania child protection clearances.
  • Eligibility to work in accordance with NCAA, conference, and University requirements.
