Description
Assists the Head Tennis Coach with the daily operations of the men's and women's tennis programs at Millikin University. Analyzes performance and instructs athletes in events and techniques in preparation for and during athletic competitions. Assists the Head Coach and Athletic Director with all phases of competitive NCAA and CCIW compliant recruiting. This position will report to the Head Tennis Coach and Athletic Director. This internship is designed as a 10-month experience from August 1 to May 31. The appointment is for one year, with a possible one-year renewal. Candidate must be enrolled in Millikin University's MBA Program to be considered.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (Reporting to the Director of Golf) include, but are not limited to, the following:
Under the guidance of the Head Tennis Coach, the Intern will:
  • Assist with on-the-court coaching and individual player development.
  • Assist with coaching junior varsity and varsity during practice and competitions.
  • Assist with identification, recruitment, and retention of student-athletes.
  • Assist in all areas of team development, including in-season and out-of-season activities as allowed by Millikin, CCIW, and NCAA.
  • Assist in the day-to-day operation, including but not limited to video editing, travel, and equipment.
  • Assist in promoting the tennis program through social media and game-day events.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Head Tennis Coach.
Under the guidance of the Athletic Director, the Intern will:
  • Have an opportunity to gain an understanding of the structure and organization of the NCAA, specifically Division III.
  • Have an opportunity to gain an understanding of the role of athletics in a relatively small comprehensive University.
  • Have an opportunity to gain exposure to athletic operations and event management beyond tennis.
  • Perform duties in the area of event management.
  • Perform duties as assigned by the Director of Athletics to assist with different sports programs at Millikin.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: This position does not have supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws.
Qualifications
GENERAL QUALIFICATIONS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to succeed in a result-driven professional organization. Maintaining professional performance, demeanor, team-approach and focus on results while working under pressure in a dynamic environment. Ability to establish priorities, work independently with minimal supervision, and facilitate teamwork. Highly organized, with the ability to plan, execute and multitask to meet deadlines. Must have a demonstrable commitment to promoting and enhancing diversity.
Minimum Education and/or Experience
  • Bachelor's Degree
  • Tennis coaching and/or playing experience at the collegiate level.
  • The successful candidate must demonstrate effective and excellent leadership, motivational, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
  • Physical ability to complete typical caching duties, including ability to lift and move athletic equipment.
  • Proven ability to recruit and retain quality student-athletes.
  • Proven ability to teach and implement current techniques and strategies of the sport.
  • Understanding and appreciation of NCAA Division III philosophy, rules, and regulations.
  • Commitment to the goals and objectives of Millikin University and CCIW.
  • Ability to work within and contribute to the team effort of the Millikin University Athletic Department.
  • A valid driver's license is required.
