What is an NBA Data Science job?

An NBA Data Science job involves using statistical modeling, machine learning, and data analysis to evaluate player performance, optimize team strategies, and improve decision-making in basketball operations. Professionals in this role work with large datasets, including player tracking data, game statistics, and biomechanics, to extract actionable insights. They collaborate with coaches, front-office staff, and analysts to enhance scouting, game tactics, and player development. Strong programming skills in Python or R, along with expertise in data visualization and predictive modeling, are essential for success in this field.

What does an NBA Data Science professional do?

As an NBA Data Science professional, your day-to-day work often involves cleaning and analyzing large datasets on player performance, in-game events, and scouting information. You will develop predictive models, create data visualizations, and interpret statistical results to support coaching staff and front-office decision-makers. Collaboration with coaches, video analysts, and other departments is common, as you will help translate data into actionable insights. Additionally, you'll stay up to date with the latest advancements in basketball analytics and may be asked to present findings in meetings or reports. The role is dynamic and impactful, offering opportunities to influence game strategy and long-term team development.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the NBA Data Science position?

To thrive in NBA Data Science, you need strong analytical skills, expertise in statistics, programming proficiency (usually in Python or R), and a deep understanding of basketball data and metrics, typically supported by a degree in statistics, computer science, mathematics, or a related field. Familiarity with data visualization tools, SQL databases, and machine learning frameworks is highly valued, and additional certifications in data science or analytics are beneficial. Effective communication, teamwork, and problem-solving skills set standout candidates apart, as the role requires translating complex data insights for coaches, managers, and other non-technical stakeholders. These skills are essential to drive data-informed decision-making that can impact team strategy and player performance within a fast-paced NBA environment.

Job description

Become a part of our caring community The Senior Technical Product Owner for the Next Best Action (NBA) Decision Intelligence Platform owns the product backlog and roadmap for an AI-powered personalized outreach platform serving Medicare Advantage members across omnichannel touchpoints. This person is the connective tissue between business strategy, data capabilities, and activation channels, translating complex cross-functional dependencies into sequenced, deliverable increments of value.

What You'll Own
  • Product backlog and roadmap - prioritize features across AI decisioning, data pipelines, and channel activation in close collaboration with engineering, data science, and business stakeholders
  • Data dependency management - partner with data engineering teams to ensure the right member signals (clinical, behavioral, web activity, socioeconomic) are flowing into our Databricks Lakehouse to support model training and scoring
  • Channel activation coordination - manage integration timelines and requirements with digital development teams, Adobe Experience Platform, and outreach channel teams (email, SMS, direct mail) to ensure personalized actions reach members reliably and on time
  • User story authorship - write precise, implementation-ready stories that bridge technical detail with business intent across data engineering, ML engineering, backend, and front-end squads
  • Stakeholder alignment - translate model performance, campaign results, and A/B test outcomes into business language for senior leadership; bring field and operational insights back to delivery teams
  • Rules and eligibility governance - own the backlog for business rules (suppression, frequency caps, consent, eligibility), working with compliance and business owners to keep logic current and auditable
Must-Have:
  • Sponsorship Not Available for This Role
  • Bachelor's degree in computer science or relevant field
  • 5+ years of experience
  • Experience as a Product Owner or Technical PM on a data-intensive or AI/ML platform - you understand pipelines, data quality, and model feedback loops as product problems, not just engineering concerns
  • Proven ability to manage external dependencies across data teams, digital development, and vendor channel integrations
  • Experience writing acceptance criteria and user stories that span team boundaries
  • Comfort reasoning about data - you can read a schema, interrogate a dashboard, and spot when something looks wrong
  • Demonstrated use of AI productivity tools (Claude, ChatGPT, Copilot, or similar) in day-to-day work - writing, research, analysis, or workflow automation. We expect this role to actively leverage AI to move faster with high-quality outputs.
Strong plus:
  • Familiarity with Adobe Experience Platform or similar marketing activation tools
  • Experience with cloud data platforms (Databricks, Snowflake, or equivalent)
  • Background in healthcare, insurance, or other regulated industries where compliance and member consent are first-class product concerns
  • Exposure to A/B testing frameworks and how to translate experiment results into roadmap decisions
