Job description

Who are we?
Howden is a global insurance group with employee ownership at its heart. Together, we have pushed the boundaries of insurance. We are united by a shared passion and no-limits mindset, and our strength lies in our ability to collaborate as a powerful international team comprised of 24,000 employees spanning over 56 countries.
People join Howden for many different reasons, but they stay for the same one: our culture. It's what sets us apart, and the reason our employees have been turning down headhunters for years. Whatever your priorities - work / life balance, career progression, sustainability, volunteering - you'll find like-minded people driving change at Howden.
Location: Birmingham, AL
Start date: September 2026
Salary: $75,000
Working structure: Hybrid
Application deadline: Friday, July 31, 2026
Natural Resources
Natural Resources is one of the most globally significant sectors in the insurance market. From renewable energy projects and utility networks to oil and gas operations, the industry powers economies, supports communities, and enables the infrastructure that keeps the world moving.
As an Analyst in this space, you'll work with organizations tackling some of today's biggest challenges and opportunities - including energy security, infrastructure resilience, climate adaptation, and the transition to cleaner energy sources. No two clients are the same, giving you exposure to a wide range of businesses, risks, and projects that shape the future of the global energy landscape.
If you're curious about global markets, enjoy solving complex problems, and want to build a career where you can make a tangible impact, Natural Resources offers an exciting and rewarding place to start.
Our Graduate Program
You'll join a 12-month development experience designed for recent graduates ready to build a meaningful career in insurance. From day one, you'll build an understanding of how different risks are assessed, placed, and managed, while developing the technical and commercial skills needed to advise clients effectively.
Throughout the program, you'll develop the technical knowledge, commercial awareness, and professional skills needed to succeed in a broking career. Your experience will include structured learning, professional development workshops, networking opportunities, mentoring, and access to senior leaders through speaker events and interactive sessions.
What you'll be doing
  • Gain hands-on experience supporting brokers with the placement and renewal of insurance programs for clients across the Natural Resources sector.

  • Work alongside experienced professionals to review quotes, analyze coverage options, and help develop recommendations for clients.

  • Build an understanding of the risks, challenges, and opportunities facing organizations across oil and gas, utilities, renewable energy, and infrastructure.

  • Develop technical knowledge of insurance products, market dynamics, and broking practices through real client work and structured learning.

  • Collaborate with broking, placement, and support teams to deliver high-quality solutions and service to clients.

  • Learn to navigate industry systems and processes while maintaining accurate client and policy information.

  • Participate in training, networking, and development opportunities designed to build your commercial, technical, and professional skills.

What are we looking for?
You don't need previous insurance experience or technical knowledge - we'll provide the training and support to help you succeed.
We're looking for recent graduates or students graduating soon from any degree discipline who are excited to learn, curious about business, and interested in understanding how organizations manage risk and navigate complex challenges.
You'll thrive in this role if you are:
  • On track to achieve, or have achieved, a cumulative GPA of 3.2 or above

  • Curious, proactive, and eager to learn new concepts and skills.

  • Adaptable and comfortable working in a fast-paced, evolving environment.

  • A strong communicator who enjoys building relationships and collaborating with others.

  • Motivated to take ownership of your work and contribute to team success.

  • A problem-solver who approaches challenges with a positive, solutions-focused mindset.

  • Resilient, organized, and able to manage multiple priorities effectively.

To be eligible for this program, you must have unrestricted authorization to work in the United States.
Why should you apply?
  • Opportunity to complete fully funded professional and technical qualifications relevant for your role and career pathway.

  • Excellent training and development schemes and accelerated career progression.

  • 2 days allocated to take part in volunteering schemes.

  • Medical, dental, and vision insurance, including healthcare savings and reimbursement accounts

  • 401(k) retirement plan

  • Flexible Paid Time Off and paid parental leave

  • Life and Disability insurance

Our Application Process
Our application process is designed to help you show your potential, not to test what you already know!
  • Online application form: This step is designed to be quick and straightforward and shouldn't take more than 5-10 minutes to complete. At this stage, we'll ask for key information such as your education details, eligibility to work, and a copy of your résumé.

  • Pre-recorded video interview: You will record your answers to a few questions using your phone or laptop, giving you the chance to tell us more about yourself in your own time in a relaxed setting.

  • Interview Super Day: During the day, you'll take part in a case study and interviews with colleagues from across the business, giving us the chance to learn more about your experiences, strengths, and motivations, while also giving you the opportunity to ask questions and explore whether the program is the right fit for you.

What do we offer in return?
A career that you define. At Howden, we value diversity - there is no one Howden type. Instead, we're looking for individuals who share the same values as us:
  • Our successes have all come from someone brave enough to try something new
  • We support each other in the small everyday moments and the bigger challenges
  • We are determined to make a positive difference at work and beyond

Reasonable adjustments
We're committed to providing reasonable accommodations at Howden to ensure that our positions align well with your needs. Besides the usual adjustments such as software, IT, and office setups, we can also accommodate other changes such as flexible hours* or hybrid working*.
If you're excited by this role but have some doubts about whether it's the right fit for you, send us your application - if your profile fits the role's criteria, we will be in touch to assist in helping to get you set up with any reasonable adjustments you may require.
*Not all positions can accommodate changes to working hours or locations. Reach out to your Recruitment Partner if you want to know more.
