Job Summary:

As a Senior Rail Engineer, you will play a crucial role in supporting the design and development of rail infrastructure. Your experience and leadership will be instrumental in ensuring the success of our rail projects, from concept through construction. You will work with clients, collaborate with interdisciplinary teams, and contribute to the delivery of high-quality rail solutions. You will independently apply techniques and procedures in accordance with established criteria to perform assigned tasks. This position performs routine technical work that requires previous experience.

In addition to these responsibilities, this role includes the opportunity to grow into leading the Southern California Rail Design team. You will be expected to mentor staff in both technical skills and leadership development, helping to shape the next generation of engineers. As a key leader, you will play an essential role in the success of our West Coast projects, while continuing to collaborate closely with our National Rail Design team.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • CAD Design: Utilize Computer-Aided Design (CAD) software to create detailed drawings, plans, and layouts for rail infrastructure and related components.
  • Technical Expertise: Apply knowledge of rail design principles to solve complex engineering challenges, including developing detailed construction cost estimates and project specifications.
  • Technical Support: Collaborate with a team of rail engineers to provide technical support in the development of rail projects, ensuring design meets quality and client standards.
  • Data Analysis: Collect and analyze data relevant to rail projects.
  • Collaboration: Work closely with cross-functional teams, including engineers and project managers, to ensure seamless project execution and compliance with design requirements.
  • Quality Assurance: Participate in quality assurance and quality control activities to ensure designs meet high technical standards, align with client expectations, and adhere to applicable guidelines and best practices.
  • Mentorship: Act as a mentor to junior engineers and designers, providing guidance and support to promote their professional growth.
  • Leadership: Take on a growing leadership role within the Southern California Rail Design team by guiding staff in technical development and leadership skills. Serve as a key contributor to the success of West Coast rail projects while maintaining close collaboration with the National Rail Design team.
  • Other Duties: Perform other duties as assigned or required to meet business needs.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:

  • Proficiency in CAD software (Microstation, InRail/InRoads) is required.
  • Microstation Connect, OpenRail experience is a plus.
  • Knowledge of rail industry regulations, codes, and standards.
  • Ability to direct and lead engineers and designers to successfully deliver PS&E, from concept to final design, and other project related deliverables.
  • Willingness to teach design skills and topics to junior staff.
  • Participate in project meetings and present technical aspects of engineering tasks with clarity and professionalism.
  • Strong attention to detail and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to lead through clear, effective communication within the team and across departments.
  • Ability to work collaboratively within teams, both national and local.
  • Eagerness to learn and adapt to new technologies and tools.
  • Engaged in life-long learning to maintain knowledge of contemporary issues.
  • Ability to lead multiple rail design projects at the same time.
  • Ability to work independently, take ownership of tasks, and manage your work plan to meet overall quality, budgets, and schedules.

Required Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil engineering from an ABET/EAC accredited program
  • EIT Required
  • 10+ years of prior experience

Preferred Education and Experience:

  • Professional Engineer (PE) in CA or ability to obtain shortly after joining our team
  • Experience leading technical rail design teams

Additional Qualifications, Certifications, etc.:

  • Member of a professional practice organization, national board member or officer, or national technical or policy committee member

Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • Lead and support team members to ensure the successful delivery of high-quality rail design projects.
  • Provide mentorship and guidance to staff in both technical development and leadership growth.
  • Oversee the preparation and review of scopes, budgets, and schedules for project assignments.
  • Take an active role in proposal development and client communication to secure and execute professional services.
  • Collaborate with regional and national teams to align design efforts and share best practices across offices.
