Job description
Description
The Director of Information Technology serves as the senior technology leader for Washington National Cathedral and provides strategic technology leadership, operational oversight, and technical expertise in support of the Cathedral's mission and business objectives. This position is responsible for developing and executing technology strategies that enhance organizational effectiveness, strengthen cybersecurity, improve service delivery, and ensure the reliability and sustainability of technology systems and infrastructure.Â
The Director oversees all aspects of technology operations, including infrastructure, cybersecurity, cloud services, telecommunications, enterprise applications, vendor management, and end-user support. Working closely with Cathedral leadership, the Director translates organizational goals into technology solutions, advises on emerging technologies and technology investments, and develops long-term plans that support innovation, operational excellence, and responsible stewardship of resources.Â
In addition to supporting Washington National Cathedral, the Director provides technology leadership for shared services provided by the Protestant Episcopal Cathedral Foundation (PECF) to Close institutions and plays a key role in planning and implementing the future evolution of those services, including strategies to reduce shared dependencies and support the long-term transition of PECF technology systems from the cathedral.org environment. As a collaborative leader and trusted advisor, the Director partners with stakeholders across the Cathedral, PECF, and other Close institutions to ensure technology services remain secure, effective, and aligned with organizational priorities.Â
This position is both strategic and hands-on. While the Director is responsible for developing long-term technology strategy, cybersecurity initiatives, and infrastructure planning, they are also expected to actively participate in day-to-day technology operations. As the Cathedral's primary internal technology leader, the Director must be comfortable moving between executive planning discussions and direct technical execution, including troubleshooting systems, coordinating vendors, supporting end users, and managing technology projects from concept through implementation.Â
This role requires a leader who is equally comfortable presenting a multi-year technology roadmap to executive leadership in the morning and troubleshooting a critical technology issue later that afternoon.Â
Duties and Responsibilities:Â
IT Strategy, Leadership, and Organizational PlanningÂ
- Serve as the Cathedral's senior technology leader and trusted advisor to executive leadership on technology strategy, innovation, cybersecurity, infrastructure, and digital transformation.Â
- Develop and maintain a multi-year technology roadmap aligned with organizational priorities, operational needs, and financial resources.Â
- Identify opportunities to improve efficiency, security, collaboration, and service delivery through the effective use of technology.Â
- Provide strategic recommendations regarding emerging technologies, system modernization, cloud services, cybersecurity initiatives, and digital workplace tools.Â
- Partner with Cathedral leadership to evaluate future technology needs and develop plans that support organizational growth and sustainability.Â
- Lead planning efforts related to technology governance, risk management, disaster recovery, and business continuity.Â
- Balance long-term strategic planning with direct involvement in technology operations and project execution.Â
- Translate organizational priorities into practical technology solutions and personally drive implementation efforts when appropriate.Â
Washington National Cathedral Technology OperationsÂ
- Direct and oversee all Cathedral technology operations, including infrastructure, systems administration, networking, cybersecurity, telecommunications, cloud platforms, software applications, and end-user support.Â
- Ensure the reliability, security, availability, and performance of Cathedral technology systems and services.Â
- Oversee technology support processes and service delivery standards to ensure responsive and effective support for Cathedral employees.Â
- Develop and maintain technology policies, procedures, standards, and documentation.Â
- Monitor technology assets and lifecycle management strategies, including hardware, software, licensing, and replacement planning.Â
- Manage technology-related projects from planning through implementation and ongoing support.Â
- Serve as a visible and accessible technology resource for Cathedral staff, providing hands-on troubleshooting, guidance, and technical support when needed.Â
- Personally participate in the administration, configuration, and maintenance of technology systems while coordinating specialized work through vendors and consultants.Â
- Lead technology initiatives from planning through execution, remaining actively involved throughout implementation and post-launch support.Â
Protestant Episcopal Cathedral Foundation (PECF) Technology OperationsÂ
- Provide technology leadership and operational support for PECF systems and services including infrastructure, systems administration, networking, cybersecurity, telecommunications, cloud platforms, software applications, disaster recovery, business continuity, and end-user support.Â
- Collaborate with PECF leadership to assess technology needs, priorities, budgets, and strategic initiatives.Â
- Ensure technology services provided to PECF staff are delivered efficiently, securely, and in alignment with organizational objectives.Â
- Advise PECF leadership on future-state technology planning and opportunities to increase organizational independence where appropriate.Â
- Conduct feasibility analysis for transition of PECF shared services from a Microsoft to a Google-based environment; plan and execute transition if approved by PECF leadership.Â
Shared Services and Domain Transition PlanningÂ
- Lead the strategic planning and execution of initiatives related to shared technology services between Washington National Cathedral and PECF.Â
- Develop and maintain a long-term roadmap for reducing and simplifying shared technology infrastructure and services.Â
- Manage, secure and maintain dedicated on-premise servers and network architecture supporting certain life safety systems while also planning and executing the transition of these systems to be cloud based.Â
- Maintain, monitor and optimize campus-wide fiber/internet ring infrastructure that services certain institutions and supports critical life safety systems.Â
- Lead planning efforts related to the future transition of PECF technology services from the cathedral.org domain and associated systems.Â
- Collaborate with stakeholders to evaluate technical, operational, financial, and cybersecurity implications of shared service transitions.Â
- Ensure continuity of operations while implementing changes that support organizational autonomy and long-term sustainability.Â
Cybersecurity, Risk Management, and ComplianceÂ
- Lead cybersecurity strategy, implementing and monitoring safeguards, awareness training, and incident response planning for the PECF and Cathedral; collaborate on these same issues with other members of the Core Tech team.Â
- Assess organizational technology risks and recommend appropriate mitigation strategies.Â
- Ensure technology systems and practices align with applicable legal, regulatory, privacy, and security requirements.Â
- Keep organizational leadership informed of cybersecurity threats, vulnerabilities, system limitations, and emerging risks, while providing actionable recommendations.Â
- Appropriately and timely address any cybersecurity threats or breaches collaborating with necessary internal and external partners.Â
- Build and maintain appropriate change management documentation for technology initiatives; provide proactive consulting and clear communication to other staff navigating system upgrades, venue technology changes, or platform transitions.Â
Vendor, Contract, and Budget ManagementÂ
- Develop and manage technology operating and capital budgets for the Cathedral and PECF.Â
- Evaluate, negotiate, and manage relationships with technology vendors, consultants, and service providers.Â
- Ensure technology investments provide appropriate value, reliability, and alignment with organizational priorities.Â
- Act as the primary point of coordination for technology vendors and managed service providers, ensuring accountability, responsiveness, and alignment with organizational needs.Â
- Maintain sufficient technical knowledge of all supported systems to effectively oversee vendor performance and independently address routine operational issuesÂ
Collaboration and Institutional PartnershipsÂ
- Serve as a member of the Core Tech Team and collaborate with technology representatives from other Close institutions on shared initiatives.Â
- Provide technology consultation and support for enterprise initiatives, major events, audiovisual systems, and operational projects.Â
- Communicate technical concepts effectively to non-technical audiences and assist leadership in making informed technology decisions.Â

- Ability to assess technology risks, evaluate solutions, and make sound recommendations to organizational leadership.Â
- Demonstrated ability to operate effectively in a lean technology environment, balancing strategic leadership with hands-on technical execution.Â
- Comfortable serving as both technology strategist and working practitioner, with the ability to shift between executive-level planning and direct operational support.Â

- Excellent verbal, written, and presentation skills, including the ability to communicate complex technical concepts to non-technical audiences.Â
