Job Summary

Since its inception in 1985, National Institute for AviationResearch (NIAR) at Wichita State University has made a name foritself as the most capable university-based aviation researchcenter in the United States, providing research, design, testing,certification and training to the aviation manufacturing industry,government agencies, educational entities and other clients thatcan benefit from our services.

NIAR is looking for a talented Design Engineer to join our growing,innovative team. This position will be an independent contractorconsulting as a Design Engineer with NIAR to support variousdiverse customer programs. This person will support design tasksacross structural elements, systems installations, and engineeringdeliverables throughout the product lifecycle. They will executechanges to CAD models, drawings, and other documents in support ofthe product, participate in trade studies, create and maintain ICDs(interface control documents), and coordinate with customers. Sometravel may be required.

Responsibilities
  • Designs and substantiates structure, mechanical systems, andinterior components on various company projects and programs acrossthe entire lifecycle of design and development.
  • Design activity includes primary structure, flight test anddevelopment structure, instrumentation, flight controls, ECS,secondary structures, interiors, control surfaces, special missionequipment, prototype development, etc.
  • Prepare and maintain technical documentation such as designdatasets, change requests, and engineering reports.
Requirements
  • Ability to work on-site 80% of the time
  • This position requires access to EAR or ITAR controlledtechnologies. Applicants are required to be eligible for employmentunder U.S. export control laws and must meet the requirement ofbeing a “U.S. Citizen”.
  • Bachelor or above degree in engineering technical disciplinewith two (2) years’ experience
  • Self-motivated and driven to produce high quality designs onschedule
  • Experience in 3D CAD tools (3DExperience, CATIA V5, Siemens NX,Solidworks)
  • Familiarity with NASA and/or FAA structural designstandards
  • Experience with airframe structure, systems, or interior designusing appropriate CAD workbenches
  • Experience developing and modifying 3D models & drawings orMBD datasets
  • Familiar with GD&T, design fundamentals, and ASME standardsY14.5, Y14.31, Y14.37, and Y14.41
  • Proficiency of GD&T tolerance application
  • Experience with Microsoft Office (word, excel,PowerPoint).
  • Excellent writing and communication skills
  • Domestic travel up to 10 % may be required
