What is a NASA biomedical engineer?

A NASA Biomedical Engineering job involves applying engineering and medical principles to support human health and performance in space. Biomedical engineers at NASA work on developing life support systems, astronaut health monitoring technologies, and countermeasures for space-related medical challenges. They collaborate with scientists, physicians, and engineers to ensure astronauts remain healthy during missions. Their work includes designing equipment, conducting research, and improving medical protocols for space travel.

What does a NASA biomedical engineer do?

NASA Biomedical Engineers typically spend their days designing and evaluating biomedical devices and systems that support astronaut health during missions, conducting laboratory or simulation research, and analyzing physiological data from spaceflight experiments. They work closely with multidisciplinary teams that may include medical doctors, engineers from other specialties, and mission planners to ensure all solutions meet stringent safety and performance standards. The role often involves documentation for compliance and participation in meetings to discuss ongoing projects, challenges, and innovations. This dynamic environment requires adaptability and a proactive approach to problem-solving, as new health challenges can arise throughout various mission phases.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as a NASA biomedical engineer?

To thrive as a NASA Biomedical Engineer, you need a solid background in biomedical engineering, life sciences, or a related field, usually supported by at least a bachelor's or master's degree. Familiarity with data analysis software, medical device design tools, and regulatory standards like FDA or NASA-specific protocols is essential. Strong problem-solving abilities, teamwork, and excellent written and verbal communication skills help professionals excel in complex, interdisciplinary projects. These competencies are vital for ensuring astronaut safety and supporting critical biomedical research and device development in spaceflight environments.

Can I work at NASA as a biomedical engineer?

Yes, biomedical engineers can work at NASA in roles related to human health, medical device development, and life support systems for space missions. These positions typically require a relevant degree, such as biomedical engineering or a related field, along with experience in research, engineering, or medical technology. Job description

Are you passionate about shaping the future of humanity's presence in space? Lunar Outpost, an industry leader in space robotics and planetary vehicles, invites you to join our team! Lunar Outpost is dedicated to creating a permanent presence in space, while also driving positive impacts here on Earth. We are currently seeking a Senior Staff Crew Systems Engineer - Crew Systems IPT to contribute to our mission in a dynamic startup environment. As the Crew Systems IPT Lead, this role will lead the development and integration of human-facing systems for a NASA Class A human spaceflight program. This position combines work at the forefront of commercial spaceflight with excellence in human spaceflight through delivery of a safe, reliable, and capable system for the lunar surface. As the Crew Systems IPT Lead, you will oversee a crossโ€‘functional team responsible for the endโ€‘toโ€‘end design, integration, and delivery of crew accommodations and interfaces. You will collaborate closely with human spaceflight stakeholders from NASA and the commercial industry, Lunar Dawn engineering teams across multiple disciplines, and subcontractors/suppliers to ensure that the LTVS solution meets rigorous humanโ€‘rating and certification requirements.

Key Responsibilities
  • Serve as the technical and programmatic leader for the Crew Systems Integrated Product Team, accountable for performance, cost, and schedule.
  • Lead the development of Crew System hardware and software, including displays and controls, seating and restraints, lighting, stowage, ingress/egress systems, and humanโ€‘machine interfaces.
  • Collaborate closely and extensively with human spaceflight customers at NASA, across numerous humanโ€‘related offices, to ensure a satisfactory Crew Systems solution.
  • Ensure compliance with all applicable NASA Class A requirements, including human systems integration, safety, and certification standards.
  • Contribute to the definition and management of requirements, interfaces, and verification plans across internal and external stakeholders.
  • Coordinate technical work across mechanical, electrical, software, thermal, safety, and systems engineering disciplines.
  • Own the integration and validation of crew systems through design reviews, ground testing, and flight readiness milestones (e.g., CDR, FRR).
  • Support the development and delivery of training, procedures, and flight products related to crew system usage.
  • Champion a culture of safety, innovation, and mission success.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelorโ€™s degree in aerospace, industrial, biomedical, or related fields of engineering or science.
  • Minimum of 11 years of experience in aerospace systems development, including 5+ years in technical leadership roles.
  • Demonstrated experience developing and integrating complex, humanโ€‘rated systems.
  • Strong leadership, project management, and communication skills.
  • Familiarity with NASA systems engineering processes and human spaceflight certification requirements.
  • Able to simultaneously govern multiple, disparate tasks.
  • Able to operate under notable pressure within tight timelines.
  • Selfโ€‘motivated, focused, and driven to meet critical deadlines.
  • Excellent organization and time management skills.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • U.S. Person.
Preferred Qualifications
