What does a nanny do?

A nanny plays a special role in a child’s life. Nannies are childcare professionals who assist parents with the day-to-day work of caring and raising children and are responsible for the children’s well-being and supportive of their emotional needs. As a nanny, your responsibilities may include preparing meals, dressing and bathing the children, arranging playdates, accompanying children to activities, and helping with schoolwork. Nannies typically work during the parent's work hours, but some families have nannies come early in the morning or stay at night until the kids go to bed. You may also be responsible for dropping off and picking up the kids at school and performing light housework.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a nanny, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Nanny, you need strong childcare knowledge, first aid/CPR certification, and often experience or training in early childhood development. Familiarity with child safety systems, age-appropriate activities, and sometimes communication apps for parent updates are important technical tools. Patience, reliability, adaptability, and excellent communication skills help nannies build trust and connect with both children and parents. These abilities are vital for ensuring the child's safety, fostering healthy development, and maintaining positive family relationships.

How do nannies typically coordinate with parents to ensure consistent child care routines?

Nannies often maintain open and regular communication with parents to align on daily routines, discipline approaches, and developmental activities for the children. This can involve daily handover notes, shared digital calendars, or scheduled check-ins to discuss the child's progress and any concerns. By working collaboratively, nannies help provide stability for the children and adapt to any changes in family needs or schedules. This partnership is key to delivering high-quality, personalized care and fostering a positive home environment.

A hands-on mother is seeking an experienced Part-Time Mother’s Helper/Nanny to provide an extra set of hands for her busy household. The family has three children, ages 8, 6, and 2, with a fourth baby due in November.

This is a great opportunity for a nanny who enjoys working alongside parents. The family is looking for someone who can step in wherever needed, whether that means helping with the children, preparing food, doing laundry, running an errand, or keeping the day moving smoothly. A Mary Poppins-type candidate who naturally sees what needs to be done will thrive in this role.

 Schedule:

  • Monday, Wednesday, and Friday
  • Approximately 4 hours per day (can be flexible for 5, totaling to 15 hrs a week)
  • Travel with the family will be required periodically, particularly as the family travels next spring with a new baby

  • Providing an extra set of hands for mom throughout the day
  • Helping care for the two-year-old while mom is home
  • Assisting with the older children's routines, activities, and homework

  • Assisting with the transition after the new baby arrives, including helping with the older children while mom cares for the infant
  • Preparing simple meals and snacks for the family
  • Food preparation and kitchen support
  • Children's laundry and general household laundry
  • Grocery shopping and occasional household errands
  • Light tidying and organization related to the children and family
  • Traveling with the family as needed to provide additional childcare support

  • Warm, nurturing, and engaging personality
  • Proactive and naturally helpful
  • Comfortable working alongside a very hands-on mother
  • Someone who understands that the role is to support the family rather than take over

  • Comfortable caring for children of different ages
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Someone who naturally notices what needs to be done and is happy to jump in
  • A polished, career nanny who takes pride in her work
  • Warm, nurturing, and engaging personality
  • Proactive and naturally helpful

  • $40–$45/hour DOE
