What Does a Nanny Do?

A nanny plays a special role in a child’s life. Nannies are childcare professionals who assist parents with the day-to-day work of caring and raising children and are responsible for the children’s well-being and supportive of their emotional needs. As a nanny, your responsibilities may include preparing meals, dressing and bathing the children, arranging playdates, accompanying children to activities, and helping with schoolwork. Nannies typically work during the parent's work hours, but some families have nannies come early in the morning or stay at night until the kids go to bed. You may also be responsible for dropping off and picking up the kids at school and performing light housework.

What are nannies?

Nannies are childcare professionals who provide personalized care and supervision for children, usually within the family's home. Their responsibilities often include preparing meals, organizing activities, assisting with homework, and ensuring the safety and well-being of the children they watch over. Nannies can work full-time, part-time, or live-in, and may also handle light housekeeping related to the children. They play an important role in supporting families by offering reliable and nurturing care tailored to each child's needs.

In summary, a nanny provides ongoing, long-term childcare with potential certifications and a regular schedule, while a babysitter offers temporary, occasional care without formal credentials. Both roles serve different needs based on the family's requirements.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Nanny, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Nanny, you need strong childcare knowledge, first aid/CPR certification, and often experience or training in early childhood development. Familiarity with child safety systems, age-appropriate activities, and sometimes communication apps for parent updates are important technical tools. Patience, reliability, adaptability, and excellent communication skills help nannies build trust and connect with both children and parents. These abilities are vital for ensuring the child's safety, fostering healthy development, and maintaining positive family relationships.

How do nannies typically coordinate with parents to ensure consistent child care routines?

Nannies often maintain open and regular communication with parents to align on daily routines, discipline approaches, and developmental activities for the children. This can involve daily handover notes, shared digital calendars, or scheduled check-ins to discuss the child's progress and any concerns. By working collaboratively, nannies help provide stability for the children and adapt to any changes in family needs or schedules. This partnership is key to delivering high-quality, personalized care and fostering a positive home environment.

Job description

LOCAL CANDIDATES ONLY! GREENWICH, CT — SUMMER 2026: A warm, active, and welcoming family is seeking a FULL-TIME SUMMER NANNY from June 1st through mid-August to help care for their three children, ages 5, 8, and 10. This is a wonderful opportunity for a calm, confident, and emotionally grounded caregiver who enjoys engaging school-aged children through curiosity, creativity, structure, and outdoor fun while becoming a supportive and steady presence within the home.

The children are outgoing, bright, and inquisitive, and the family is seeking a nanny who is patient, safety-conscious, emotionally intuitive, and able to command respect while remaining warm, approachable, and genuinely engaging. Experience working with children with differing needs and/or an occupational therapy background is highly valued. The ideal candidate is someone who can maintain healthy boundaries, stay calm under pressure, and foster a respectful and structured environment while still bringing warmth, fun, and flexibility to each day.

The schedule will generally be Monday through Friday from 2:00 PM–8:00 PM, with the opportunity for additional weekend hours for candidates interested in working more. Travel may be required from time to time, and a car will be provided for all work-related transportation.

The household also includes two friendly King Charles Cavaliers who love attention and cuddling, so comfort around dogs is essential. The family is looking for a nanny who is highly present and attentive with the children; someone naturally engaging, interactive, and not distracted by their phone while on duty. The ideal fit is adaptable, steady, mature, and genuinely enjoys building relationships with children while helping the home run smoothly throughout the summer months.

While the family is open to discussing a live-in arrangement if needed, their strong preference is for a live-out nanny given the temporary nature of the role. Compensation is anticipated at $30–40/hr gross per hour via payroll, depending on experience and overall fit.
